This movie was GREAT! I remember watching this when I was much younger, it wasn't my first Godzilla movie but it certainly got my attention. The movie has a solid storyline and great character development. Unlike the 2014 Godzilla movie, we see a lot of the human characters and their stories to make us actually care and feel like we know them. The monster herself got a lot of screentime and in decent lighting, so the viewers got to see her full form a lot of the time, unlike the 2014 Godzilla movie. Several classic Godzilla movies have a dark tone with no relief, while this has has just enough to make it enjoyable for more younger people to wach and enjoy more often.
The two problems with the movie are the American Military forces... and of course the creature herself. The American Military in this movie aren't the brightest, and it takes the French Secret Forces and a rag tag of Americans to take down Godzilla. Sure, the Navy scene made sense as one would want to ensure no creature could escape the island by sea. That was smart. However, the ground and airforces could have been better deployed to better catch the creature earlier on and more often. The creature is, in my view, TriStar's attempt at a realistic Godzilla. I personally liked the creature concept... even though more Gojira traits could have been added to the design and still maintain their realisim desire. So as long as you know the creature isn't a true Gojira but Zilla, then many people can sit down and enjoy this decent monster movie. Overall story, character development, and creature screentime are far better and more than the 2014 Godzilla film.
