If Sergio Leone had made this film he may have called it “The Good, The Bad and The Corporate. “ The Corporate being the real villains in this endeavour.
CHAPPIE is a very good film, but. Compared to Neill Blomkamps’ movie Elysium, CHAPPIE appears to rely on a similar format. Maybe a little too similar. There is a robot company that produces law enforcement robots. The person at the top of the tree is a named Hollywood actress. In this case Sigourney Weaver. The real villains are employed by the company, and the underlying plot might appear to be a rework of the Elysium plot. That would on the surface of things, appear to be the comfort zone that first comes across. The reality is that Neill Blomkamp has a gift of taking ideas and concepts that have been seen before and like cinematic Lego, forms the building blocks that we recognise into a different work of art. What may first start out as a predictable Sci-fi movie becomes punctuated with social narratives and twists that are not always comfortable, or predictable. The action is where it needs to be, and allegiance to characters is manipulated at good points in the overall plot. Ultimately, this movie does what a good Sci-fi movie should do. You get to the end and go, “What do you say to that”.
Good film, good action, and as always with Neill Blomkamp, good social narrative.
Worth the watch.
