The movie is often said to be "slow" and while some scenes to seem to be extremely so with seemingly nothing happening in the movie, I thought the movie was not at all slow, and I say that because the word "slow" has a slightly negative connotation, implying the movie is bad or not that good since it is slow.
I argue the movie just builds tension as long as possible, but not in a bad way. The effects are realistic, hell, even mroe realistic than a lot of movies today, and the movie was made in 1968!
Definitely a classic and a masterpiece, a movie that even though I've met some people who didn't like it, they still admitted it is 'without a doubt, by any practicle definition of the word'- a masterpiece.
One thing that makes this movie one of my favorite movies is that it's up for your own interpretation- you can take it literally, metaphorically, spiritually, religiously, you can view it even with an anti-theist message (something Kubrick, the director, even said you coudl intrepret as)- it's a personal odyssey. You can't really explain the plot. There's quick summaries of it online, but they all don't really describe what the movie is since it's up to you to decide.
The ending will confuse you, and even if at times you find it annoying or painful to watch, you should watch it because it is a classic, and you will recognize references of this movie in many ways.
As a final remark, the soundtrack is excellently composed, or should I say recomposed, as it uses many classical music pieces, pieces you may even recognize from Tom and Jerry.
I definitely recommend.
