I was guessing maybe they were for navigation in dark areas, but your explanations make more sense. A simple flashlight would probably be more effective for navigation. It's not going to be very helpful if the lights are shining upwards.

It is for medicinal purposes. Soothing weylight radiation therapy. Like Infrared the light is invisible to the human eye but the camera's photo receptor is sensitive in that frequency range and picks it up as yellow. I am more concerned about a crew that needs their names written across their forehead in magic marker. Right. But the in-helmet lights are not necessarily the only solution. Looking at the trailer of Abyss, it seems like the faces are lit externally. In Leviathan a rather minimal lighting of the faces is used. Anyway, maybe it is about the continuity too, as Famished says. And maybe there is also some projection issue.

Likewise, the other crew members need to see the faces of the others. It just heightens communication of a group working together. I suppose they could interact with a heads up camera display of the communicating faces within the face plate, but then, that would be clumsy. I think the lights are the best solution--both real and for cinema. They said the same stuff about the Nostromo helmets. Maybe this is one place where continuity is direct.

The whole point of the fish bowl helmets and the lights is so you can see the actors faces, they spent a lot of time in the suits, would you rather we just saw a bunch of people in modern space age outfits rambling on without us knowing who the hell was who ?

Ridley had for more creative input in Alien than you apparently think he did, yes he did not write the script but he changed it and made it his and had the vision to make it what it became

I keep forgetting that Ridley didnt write it lol.....dang. The THING got messed up didnt it? I mean in the John Carpenter THING we see home movie footage of the Norwegians planting thermite charges. But the prequel showed the ship in a cavern still right up to when it powers down after the explosion.....still with the cavern cieling in place. Plus by then theres nobody left to plant the charges like we see in the original.

belladonna, that would definitely make it easier to take care of than a dog or a cat. And if you get a queen as a pet, it can lay eggs and you can sell baby xenos to your neighbors. On the other hand, you're going to need a big house if you're keeping a queen.

do xenos even eat? it doesnt appear that they poop. unless they have such an efficient digestive system that they completely use and absorb every bit of their food they consume.. id prefer the non eating and non pooping option. then we get a super cheep and clean pet, that might make up for its other not so appealing qualities.

i recall i read Scott asked Giger to design Alien "backwards" for the on in this movie (i know backwards isn't the right term but my english is insufficient) but i thought it kind of meant predecesor. edit: i just read it on imdb at Trivia, don't know if it's correct. here it is: Trivia Designer H.R. Giger, who worked on the original design of the Xenomorph Alien, was brought in to assist in reverse-engineering the design of the Aliens in the film.

In comparison to the chair he may seem smaller than what he actually is, plus you can't see his body definition because he's being covered by the suit and helmet. But besides the slats, if you look at his eye, you can see it's the same color as the space jockey's. It appears to be black.

I think you're right. It's the blue guy in the chair. It's also probably one of these space jockeys that Shaw encounters in the final scene where she's on the ground and someone is standing over her in the full trailer. The reason I think so is because he also has those same slits or whatever going down his legs.
