why? It could possibly ust the beginning scene of the film unfolding that earth was visited by this higher civilisation..and this is just an spacecraft..
ReplyCanadaPhilPrometheus ForumRipley ReturnsApr 3, 2012
Yeah.. I just pulled "Elizabeth" as a simple generic.
But if you look at the pubished Alien Universe timeline, Ellen Ripley is born in 2090.
The Prometheus project (finally planning and other stages I guess?) begins around 2075ish.. (not when they take off... But the project is now in its finaly prep. stages)
So that could make some sort of sense? given that the craft is going to be travelling for several years (rocket time??).
I mean Zeta Reticulli is 39 light years from Earth folks!! I hope no one thinks they are pulling a Star Trek "Unstable Worm Hole" or one of their umpteem "Subspace Anamoly" plot?

Well YES.... It IS the dawn of MODERN mankind on Earth.. 50 to 100,000 years ago.
But what I was trying to say is that then, for whatever reason, the entire TEMPLE COMPLEX had visited here.
We already have how many new different life forms appearing in this?? black, worms, pale eels, squidbillies, Big Blue Meanies... What else??
If on top of that they start also having MULTIPLE SPACE TRAVELLING ALIENS, this thing is going to get completely ridiculous & convoluted... (But ummm.. maybe it will be... sigh... )
ReplyBigDavePrometheus ForumImage: Saucer MarkingsApr 3, 2012

ReplySeanPrometheus ForumRipley ReturnsApr 3, 2012
CanadaPhil, Elizabeth is Shaw's first name, so that would be redundant, but it would be interesting since it looks like Holloway and Shaw are romantically involved from the trailers and Ripley's daddy was a cheater.
I would just have a short scene where one of the crew members (I guess it really only leaves Holloway as the most likely candidate) watches a video from home and the mother is like "wave to daddy, Ellen" and leave it ambiguous if it is indeed Ripley or just a coincidence.

This list minus a few exceptions [i would have "A Boy and his Dog" on it instead of star trek the motionless picture, and I strongly dislike close encounters. Star Wars is space opera which I class as different then sci-fi, superman is a super hero flick.] is a pretty good overview of good scifi pre-blade runner. THX1138 I can't believe I forgot. Love that movie.
Time Bandits as well. There is tons of amazing pre-Blade Runner scifi that doesn't insult peoples intelligence. Post Blade Runner, there is far LESS good stuff. Maybe a handful of true greats but for the most part misses.

Wait What? Um, you forgot 2001. And Solaris, Stalker, Clockwork Orange [movie i hate but many love]. There is tons of great scifi pre-Blade Runner. Even the original "Planet of the Apes" and shit

ReplySlowboatPrometheus ForumThe Space JockeyApr 3, 2012
I'm now thinking, based on the flying saucer and veiny guy in the trailer, that there's no such thing as the Space Jockey "race" - just one human who in ancient times was abducted by or infiltrated an alien ship and acquired/was infected with advanced biotechnology. He became godlike in his intelligence and physical prowess, grew the derelict spaceship, and single-handedly built all of human civilization, ruling over us as something more than human but not quite a god.
The xenomorph is either a well-intentioned project to bring the rest of us to his level gone horribly wrong, or his attempt to transform humanity into an unstoppable invasion force with which to dominate the galaxy.
Either way, when the alien race dropped in to check on Earth centuries later, they were not super pumped about his actions, and imprisoned him on the planet he chose as a base of operations/staging area for invasion.
Ancient humans were never aware of his diabolical plans for them, and thought he was just a really cool guy, a Titan, who brought them civilization and technology. They thought it was a great injustice that the gods stepped in to punish him, and they left lots of positive reviews on cave walls and temples, not to mention starting the oral history of the Prometheus myth.
ReplydarthmongoPrometheus ForumBlade Runner Apr 3, 2012
I agree that people who weren't alive (or old enough) to appreciate it aren't going to do so. It's like me when I was a kid not understanding my father saying what a great movie "Forbidden Planet" was/is (don't get me wrong, I love that movie, but it didn't hold up to movies that I grew up on like, say, "Star Wars" or "Alien". That whole look and feel of "Blade Runner" was something that was really new for the time. That, along with the debates over the many different changes the studio inflicted on Ridley (different endings, cut scenes, Harrison Ford's narrative voice overs) and "The Case of the Missing Sixth Replicant" (was it Deckard or just an editing mistake?) kept this movie alive in the minds of sci-fi fans for years.

2fray2 I know there's a lot of threads on here, but there was a post made about this same topic less than 24 hours before yours. Starting off with I don't know if this has been discussed before Isn't an excuse to not take a little effort to look back a couple pages to make sure there's nothing recent concerning your topic. This forum is becoming less enjoyable to read day by day because of all the duplicate threads popping up. I know there's stuff that was posted months ago that will pop back up, but sometimes it gets ridiculous when it's a daily thing with recent threads, the ones with Shaws baby chestburster/facehugger in particular. I'm actually venting a little off the Shaws baby duplicate threads and not yours in particular 2fray so don't take it too personal.

I found the full pic, and I think I have come up with my final version of the function of the "mechanism", but I dont think I will post it until a day or two before the Euro premier and then Im going to disappear until after the Canadian premiere to see I if was right.
But!!!.... Im still not sure if the BLUE MEANIE is in fact just the 79 "JOCKEY" in a suit or not..
But here is hint... Im pretty sure the process on the ship involves TWO of them working together.

All of you are forgetting a crucial part of the Prometheus mythology
Prometheus was a Titan, one of the precursors of the Olympians.
Prometheus took pity on the primitive humans and stole "Fire" from the Olympians and gave it to the humans.
As a result, he was punished.
Trailer says that same writing was found in ancient ruins around the world. This most likely implies that whatever extraterrestrial came to Earth, gave us "fire"; technology, intelligence, wisdom, logic etc.
However, as a result of this, something happened to the extraterrestrial "Prometheus"s and led to their downfall.
ReplykeepshowkeeperPrometheus Forumdisappointed with the Space Jockey...Apr 3, 2012
Now what really brings my blood to a boil is when some prequels try to "explain" something, and this "explanation" not only wasn't asked by anybody but actually destroys the myth of the original, and I am not only talking about Star Wars. They do it all the time in all kinds of franchises. I am very VERY worried Prometheus might do the same, especially when I look at Mr. Blue here. If he IS a space jockey, another fascinating myth is crushed to dust, namely the original space jockey, a creature not sitting in that chair, but being a part of the chair! Giger biomechanoid! THAT was the brilliant thing with "Alien": a world full of things we and the Nostromo-crew were completely unable to comprehend. This was the magic of "Alien", also expressed in it's title.
And now? That biomechanoid being isn't the space jockey! It's not even a being anymore, it's just a mere suit! For some blue humanoid guy with some alien-characteristics on his skin! After 33 years of waiting and wondering "Who are the space jockeys?" I can't accept "some big blue guys" for an answer. If the smurf-guy was a "mutated" Prometheus crewmember, I could live with that. But he just cannot be THE space jockey. He just can't.

I had always meant to ask...
What is the origin of that pic with the Blue Meanie walking past the sarcophagus and looking to his left at the "gun". Do we know its actually real and not a fake?
Can someone also post the FULL image of that in this topic. I think I see something in the blown up version shown here, that I didnt before and would like to compare it with the full size version.
Thanks

Confirming a dead crew member in the background. His glass mask is cracked in, and he has smoke coming off his body. Definitely hit by some acidic blood, or spit.
ReplyBigDavePrometheus ForumHow the big gun works.Apr 3, 2012
I guess we will get our answers in the Movie.
You have to answer these questions.
1) Why does Blue Man /Jockey need a Mask?
2) Why does the Chair Strap him into it, i.e a Harness?
When the Ship leaves onto the vacum of Space maybe this chamber/cockpit is not protected by Gravity or any kind of atmosphere. That would explain both.
So indeed maybe the Chair rises out of the Top of the Ship, or the Top fo the Ship opens up and thus leaving this room exposed to the hostile vacuum of Space.
ReplyGuestPrometheus ForumNew Room...Apr 3, 2012
Almost sure that this is the engine room. If you check out the Nostromo engine room, they are very similar. Perhaps space jockey technology was lended over to humans?? Am I onto something here? I think Weyland got some type of tech from the jockeys-
ReplyBigDavePrometheus ForumA Circular State of Promethean AffairsApr 3, 2012
There will be a connection to the Myth, maybe not exact but a connection and indeed the guy at that scene near the Waterfall could be the SJ's Prometheus thats a theory i would go along with.
Prometheus the Titan created mankind from his own genes, and without the permission of the other Titans.
So the OP's Story fits in very well with this.
ReplyBigDavePrometheus ForumWho is in the SJ chair?Apr 3, 2012
Well we will find out soon,
Ridley had said that the ship was carrying a cargo of Eggs and the Jockey is a Suit and he said that way before even Alien 3 was released.
As for the size, study the chair and compare the chairs not the Jockeys, and indeed SJ in Alien seems bigger but by comparing the chair to Dallas from Alien etc, if the Chair in this movie is the same size it would make the SJ in this movie be about 9ft
So again i would be almost willing to garuntee that the Space Jockey is the Blue Man in a Space Suit and its 9ft tall.

Weyland Industries introduces the first FTL-capable SEV (space exploration vehicle.)
So more than 4 decades PRIOR to PROMETHEUS getting under way, there had been another expedition (the HELIADES). What happened to it? What did it find? Where they all killed or did they disappear and were their findings or warnings only received back on Earth decades later??
(Notes: In Greek myth, the Heliades -'children of the sun'- were the offspring of Helios the sun god and the Oceanid Clymene, the latter of whom is also the mother of several Titans - including Prometheus

I get the impression, The SNARK, that these civilizations were shown, by this Promethean like individual or his punishers, a small window into the nature of the universe, stars and the like, so, at the very least, they or we for that matter would know where they came from; thus the pictogram pattern seen in each archealogical find is known as the place from whence HE or THEY come and should be feared, a fact lost on subsequent generations.

Im guessing the majority of the nay-sayers were not even ALIVE when Bladerunner first premiered, and have no idea what a ground breaking film it was for 1982.

@craigamore I loved the Alien boardgame, I used to play it a lot with my friends when I was a kid (well before I was allowed to actually watch the movie). It gave me the creeps anyway. I always chose the green base, because the picture in it (the SJ seat, as I came to realize a few years later) was unsettling and fascinating.
ReplyZedwardsonPrometheus ForumLighs in the collarApr 3, 2012
With Clear helmets, you will need to be able to see faces, in fact, there was a old story (Heinlein perhaps?) where kids had wildly colorful helmet designs, and when a teacher made them go to a standard color scheme, the effectivness of the kids went way down as they could not look and tell who it was.
Also, perhaps its a heads up display as some have said.

It is less impressive now then what is was as so many film producers have borrowed the look and feel of the movie. However to its credit, it is at the heart, a love story, and one of the few love stories I can stand watching.

This is 1951's THE THING with the tall James Arness (from Gunsmoke) playing the title "creature".
Look familiar??
If after 3 decades of mystique, if the "Jockey" turns out to be a color version of that, I would have to say that it would be COMPLETE LET DOWN!.
