Okay, so I spent the last evening scouring over Alien and the 03 Directors cut. Neurion you are right. The flames blasting out of the corridor and across the chamber leading to the Narcissus look absolutely ridiculous, they were more than adequete to have crisped any of the crew that would be exiting the ship. Though in the Blueray the switch between the latex Ash head and the real Ash head was much better. I do have a different question though. Considering that it takes more than five seconds for the shuttle to exit the Launch bay after igniting it's engines don't you think that bay is attached to the refinery platform rather than the Nostromo. I've always thought that it was just too enormous. Even in the extensive information on the web. Modified Lockmart CM-88B Bison Transport,LENGTH – 243.8 m (800’)
WIDTH – 164.6 m (540’)
HEIGHT – 72.05 m (246.4’)
Obviously more research is required by me. The quest is often more interesting than the actual find. Let's see what I can find....

I found this, so I guess that answers my question, :( Like I said sometimes the quest if more fun that finding the answer. The Narcissus is one of two shuttles attached to the Nostromo and is located under the port engine nacelle support. The Narcissus was the only operational shuttle in 2122, as the other one was out of order and in need of repairs. The Narcissus can support 2 people in hypersleep for extended periods.

I found these while searching the internet for facts about Alien. http://www.magnoliclothiers.com/nostromo-pants-p-442.html
It's no wonder Ripley was in her panties in the climactic last scene of Alien, some smarmy, little thief stole all the ships extra trousers.

You know, it is possible that even if they would’ve froze Kane as Parker suggested, it might have had little or no effect on the Alien Facehugger or embryo. Considering it’s so called prolonged resistance to adverse environmental conditions, the results might have been the same. I have no doubt that the film intended that viewer is to believe that Ash had a fairly good idea of what was going on, especially after analyzing the organism(s) in the infirmary, combined with the acidic blood incident, and the warning signal/beacon. He was waiting for something to happen. You could tell by the anxious expression on his smug little android face during their meal. Although, I don’t think knew any details. Ashes character is analogous to the Doctor Carrington character in the old 1951 horror film “THE THING from Another World.” The same attitude of protecting the creature in the name of science or whatever. Ash had his orders.

ReplyGhost SolitarePrometheus Forum"Why don't you just freeze him!"Sep 12, 2011
No arguement there Neurion, he knew as much as the Company chose to make a part of his ORDERS in dealing with the extraction of a specimon. Hopefully Prometheus isn't going to totally fill in all the delicious mysteries surrounding the derelict and the SJ. I'd hate to have it be all about a human transformed into a protoSJ and doing the Altruistic thing and crashing the ship on LV-426 just to save humanity. That would be like slapping a band-aid on a shot gun wound.
ReplyGhost SolitarePrometheus Forum"Why don't you just freeze him!"Sep 12, 2011
Neurion as you seem to be a long standing fan of the franchise may I pose a question to you. I'll assume you would say sure. Has anyone ever considered the possibility that a xenomorph that gestates in a SJ might be an entirely different organism? Until we have facts to the contrary who's to say that biomechanical lifeforms have very different reproductive cycles. What if the SJ's are incapable of conventional reproduction. If the facehugger/chestburster cycle were a voluntary process in order to further their species and was undertaken at a specified time. As improbible as it may seem that mosaic of H.R. Giger does raise some interesting questions, adding to the possiblities.
ReplyNeurionPrometheus Forum"Why don't you just freeze him!"Sep 12, 2011
@Ghost Solitare
"SURE"…I think that is a very plausible thought. Over the last 32 years, I’ve had similar ideas, like…maybe a SJ who gets impregnated by a facehugger with an embryo gives explosive birth to an infant Space Jockey. Maybe that’s what happens when you cross a SJ with a Xenomorph/facehugger. It could feasibly be written that this is their natural lifecycle. Could be that the harmonious and symbiotic relationship between the two is only jeopardized or turns hostile when it is interrupted by HUMANS or something else poking their noses where they have no business. Sort of an alien “coitus interruptus” situation. It is also possible that the Big “Alien” in the original film is unique to cross breeding human and the facehuggers genetics. Keep in mind that I don’t even factor in the events that occurred in ALIEN 2,3 and 4…God forbid AVP stuff.
Also, Ridley Scott has mentioned the idea of the SJ’s exoskeleton being some kind of carcass or biomechanical shell/suit. So, its true appearance could be altogether very different. Maybe the facehugger is basically a kind of extra-terrestrial penis or phallus and its nature is to be ever horny for reproduction. It could have been resting/sleeping for decades or centuries…Kane quickened or woke it up…and WHAM BAM…thank ya man! Human males wake up sportin’ “wood” as well…so there are precedents. I like the idea or the voluntary impregnation. Many earthly animals including humans, do seemingly weird, crazy, and even sacrificial shit, in the name of natural reproduction.
You've got great ideas Ghost, you and I "park our ships in the same hanger."

I read some where that the warning broadcast had detailed descriptions of the alien and it's life-cycle and that Ash knew all this going in. As the nostromo computer decifered some of the message it's easy to assume the Company has more powerful computers.
ReplyGhost SolitarePrometheus Forum"Why don't you just freeze him!"Sep 12, 2011
Hi Sophie413 The state of the derelict ship when the Nostromo encountered it would support your theory simply because the beacon has been transmitting a very long time. It's possible that the signal was detected before man was even able to go to the moon let alone beyond our solar system. Even 1979 pseudoscience for a SF film would have detected any sophisticated power sources from orbit, They knew where to land so either they triangulated the location of the beacon, or detected the derelicts unique alloys, or resins from orbit. I'd wager that the ship itself was biomechanical in origin and that it had a lot more valuable lessons for Weyland Yutani than just the Xenomorph. Putting the obvious aside, we will have to rely on our imaginations to provide details until Prometheus is released next year.

ReplyGhost SolitarePrometheus ForumLeaked space jockey design pics?Sep 12, 2011
Even if the illustration has no connection to Prometheus if you look at it from a biomechanical perspective it's quite fascinating. If its a chitinous exoskeleton, much like terrestrial insects. it would be both light weight and strong. The legs themselves could probably propel this creature from deck to deck aboard a space vessel with no need for ladders or other conveyance. It could simply leap like a nighmarish grasshopper. The carapace on the back contains at least eight armored passages that appear to be an atmospheric filtration system. That alone lends validity to the rumor that this is a biomechanical environmental suit. The deepset ocular cavities would be very prohitive regarding peripheral vision, but nature and science both find ways to compensate for any short comings.

Hmmm, let me get that bluray out and watch that exiting Nostromo sequence. I always thought that if Ripley had disabled the cooling systems for multiple fusion reactors that steam would have to be purged at choke points along the conduits, but actual flames always did confound me. Unless of course she had ignited some sort of gas that is vented into the interior of the ship during the final stages of this Auto Destruct Sequence in order to facilitate the total obliteration of said vessel, she was cutting things a bit close there.

@Ghost Solitare
It just always seemed a bit lame to me…that “Mother”/Nostromo’s programming would vent “deadly” flame at the exact point in the ship that the crew would have to pass through during an evacuation. Come to think of it…why would ship engineers design a shuttle that couldn’t possibly facilitate the entire crew…only seven members in this case. Man…this is Titanic all over again. Obviously, the minimal capacity was written in to facilitate maximum scene intensity. Personally, I think it was just a bad on-set, practical pyrotechnic effect. I think those flames are supposed to be coming Ripley’s Flame unit…and the effects timing was off. So, I think I’m just looking for some cinematic sci-fi justification…so I can watch the scene with greater ease. Not much we can do about the bogus jerkiness of Ashes decapitated head “jump cut” shot. Why didn’t Ridley Scott fix that during the re-editing of the so called “Directors Cut?” All it needed was one short insert shot. Or they could’ve digitally cheated the foreground Ripley a little more into the frame…to cover the head switch. Ughhh!

Just a quick input here...not sure I have read all the earlier ideas, so this thought might be old and useless.
Nevertheless, the creature (The Space Jockey) we see in the real Alien flick, is a corpse. One would think it has decayed over the aeons it has been stranded on that oh so remote rock. How can it then be that the sketches we see of this alien in full out streched mode looks exactly like the "corpsed" version??

ReplyNeurionPrometheus ForumSpace Jockey Evidence before our eyes !!!Sep 11, 2011
Hey Apollo,
I think that is an excellent…yet obvious observation. At least for “old school” ALIEN “nuts” like myself. I have believed that to be the case ever since I first saw that hieroglyphic-esque Giger painting in the “Book of ALIEN” back in ’79. However, that concept was being developed in the early stages of the film’s production, when the filmmakers were still tossing around the idea of an alien pyramid on the planet/oid. Since then, the ALIEN concept has gone in some different directions. It could be that Ridley Scott and Co. have decided to revisit some of those earlier “origin” concepts and ideas. That could be verrrry interesting. I’ve always been fascinated by that original storyline anyhow. And as I understand it, the filmmakers only deleted the pyramid sequence because of financial and film running time limitations. So, I totally agree with you.
As far as other members potentially getting mad at you, I completely understand your concerns. Some of the members on this forum can sometimes behave like hostile organisms. I have experienced it myself. Unfortunately for them, their hostility is usually matched by their immaturity. At least the “Alien” was acting solely on instinct…and was probably only a few hours old.:-)
Peace,
Neurion

Hey Rick,
Well I guess I just got kind of bored of a lot of the same ol’ questions and responses. Ya know? Folks bringing up, or churning up stuff that…in my opinion had already been put to rest…or something like that. Also, SOME smart assey, neo-fans talkin’ outta their whiney, alien orifices eventually becomes tiresome…even for an ol’ ALIEN addict, born in the “Summer of love,” Space-dog like Yours Truly.
As far as “instinct” goes…who knows. Maybe the “Big Chap” has a lot more to IT than just instinct. After all, from what I read, Ridley Scott originally wanted the “Alien” to start speaking on the radio after decapitating our favorite warrant officer in first flick. One never knows…

So the first stage of the alien life cycle comes from the comic belly button of a really large biomorphically crucified egyptian God Alien pierced by a pyramid temple with an eye on top? Or maybe it works from the bottom where the word Alien is and that butt with the guts pull out under the sacrificed Jockey (Who are Pawns...Willing?) and that creepy thing by the body to the left that might be another alien. What I really think is interesting is the cryptic alien writing that looks like squiggly worms surrounding a prism of Giger Tubes. Magically delicious death metal hellfire paradise! especially that hit of Lsd that looks like Neurions pick it is was shall be.
ReplyNeurionPrometheus ForumSpace Jockey Evidence before our eyes !!!Sep 11, 2011
Hello fellow ALIEN enthusiasts,
I hope this is an appropriate forum in which to pose this question.
This question has “stuck in my craw” for a long time. Near the end of the original ALIEN film, Ripley is climbing into the shuttle craft ‘Narcissus’ from the ‘Nostromo.’ She’s carrying Jones in the cat box and a flamethrower. She chucks the cat box into the shuttle and before she closes the hatch, she turns to fire a few bursts from her flamethrower…back into the ‘Nostromo,’ presumably to hold off the Alien. Just before she closes the hatch, it appears that there are a few bursts of flame emitting from the ‘Nostromo’…toward Ripley. The bursts of flame continue, and are visible through hatch/port window after the hatch is closed. Does anybody else notice this?…I assume so. It “bugs” me every time…and that’s a lot of times (probably too many). So, I guess my questions are: Is this a “no brainer”…just a botched flamethrower special effect? Was it intentional? Is it just supposed to be a normal part of the ‘Nostromo’s’ self destruct sequence? OR am I just “seeing things?”
I’m interested in your input.
Peace,
Neurion

But who can forget the famous scene in ALIEN of the Space Jockey in it's chair. This is what everyone wants to see and the story behind it. I was unsure at first about the mutation of a human turning into a Space Jockey or suit but it's starting to grow on me (- ish ha).
