Just being the best doesn't make us official... but we don't need no stinkin' credentials
We are the best. Probably.
ReplyGrindolfPrometheus Forumalien air lock explainedMar 31, 2012
Its a movie, the air gets sucked out as its dramatic, to read anything else into it is insane
ReplycraigamorePrometheus ForumDid we become the official Prometheus website?Mar 31, 2012
As a member of the staff, I think I can cofidently say it is NOT official, unless BH tells me otherwise.
ReplycraigamorePrometheus Forumalien air lock explainedMar 31, 2012
I don't think that works aintnozeno...
In the vacuum of space, especially with an opening of that size, you'd be dealing with explosive decompression as in instant and total loss of pressure....nothing to breathe at all...Wikipedia
"Decompression can occur due to structural failure of the pressure vessel, or failure of the compression system itself. The speed and violence of the decompression is affected by the size of the pressure vessel, the differential pressure between the inside and outside of the vessel and the size of the leak hole.....Explosive decompression occurs at a rate swifter than that at which air can escape from the lungs, typically in less than 0.1 to 0.5 seconds. The risk of lung trauma is very high, as is the danger from any unsecured objects that can become projectiles because of the explosive force, which may be likened to a bomb detonation. After an explosive decompression within an aircraft, a heavy fog may immediately fill the interior as the relative humidity of cabin air rapidly changes as the air cools and condenses. Military pilots with oxygen masks have to pressure-breathe, whereby the lungs fill with air when relaxed, and effort has to be exerted to expel the air again."
The conditions described there are in high altitudes where oxygen levels are low, but still existent...In the vacuum of space, you would have instantaneous total and explosive decompression from an opening as massive as that airlock.

Gravity has nothing to do with atmosphere. Gravity holds you in your seat on a plane, but guess what happens if you pop a window at 35,000 feet? Explosive decompression- gravity or not. Difference in ambient pressure, nothing more.
The vacuum of space is many times more of a difference in potential than just a pressurized cabin. What you saw in Aliens is completely plausible. Probable Hollywood drama and action, but the effect is completely realistic.
Now how the heck they made gravity, is something I can't explain. If I could, I would be as rich as Weyland.
ReplyMala'kakPrometheus ForumVicker's involvment.Mar 31, 2012
If she was an assassin it would be awesome, Weyland is all obsessed with eternal life and someone sneaks aboard his craft and just offs him before he gets a chance to play with his new toys.

ReplygoodkatPrometheus Forumalien air lock explainedMar 31, 2012
Why wouldn't the artificial gravity seen in the movie and many other sci fi movies be weaponized or used for many other purposes?
Surely the technology to pull things without physically touching them would be used literally fucking everywhere. Why don't we see people walking on ceilings and on walls, why are there no telekinetic weapons or tools? Why would the loader Ripley drives even need legs or arms???!
Movies always seem to ignore the full potential of their fictional technology.

I'm Michael Caine! No, but seriously, I'm David Peoples, if you have any questions for me, go ahead, i'm ready. I'm also recommending all of you to get promotions and a free trip to Las Vegas.

I thought the characterizations and acting were brilliantly done. They perfectly portrayed a crew of working class stiffs thrust into a situation they have no business in. The perfection of their portrayal caused me to only be interested in their present rather than their past.

The important question is not which one is Scott, but which ones of you SOBs is David Giler and Walter Hill? C'mon, I know you two are out there!

Not that interesting? As opposed to what? The Godfather? OK. As opposed to Halloween? Or Dawn of the Dead? Or 98% of horror movies? lol.

(@db, lol, yes, maybe chuduthu - cannibalistic humanoid ridley scott)
could also be: Duh...TC
but who's TC?
Replyaka NatePrometheus ForumSymbiotic SpeciesMar 31, 2012
I don't necessarily believe the black goo is a "primordial" thing, but quite the opposite actually..... I think they're so advanced they assimilate to existing biology and alter (mutate) it to something more physical for themselves.

vickers could be a joke on victoria - a queen's name
elizabeth is also a queen's name

The most interesting thing about the characters in Alien is that there is nothing that interesting about them. I never thought much about who they were and where they came from... Except Ash. He was the most complex character in the film.

ReplyartyohPrometheus Forumdisappointed with the Space Jockey...Mar 31, 2012
"Oh, but I'm not disappointed wih the look of the space jockey. I'm tired of aliens looking like insects, octopuses, and all that crap. I think an intelligent sophisticated alien life form would have a beautiful symmetrical form, so I'm with ridley on this one. No elephant looking creatures PLEASE. The only thing that gets me is the hair. Why are aliens with a human like body always bald."
It's almost certainly a result of the hominid line which ultimately lead to us, becoming less hairy over time; the presumption being that completely hairless=more advanced.
