clayjAlien Movies ForumWeyland-Yutani's demise?Apr 2, 2012
I believe that the novelization of "Alien Resurrection" states that it was, in fact, Walmart who took over Weyland-Yutani.
This premise is so ridiculous that I don't consider it canon -- as far as I am concerned, any mention of Walmart is purely a result of the author trying to be a smartass. (Much of the movie conveys that same feeling to me -- so much so that I don't consider it in the same league as the first three movies.)
It's entirely possible that in the 200 years between Ripley's death and resurrection, that The Company simply became too large to remain intact -- and that some part of it (the part dealing with bioweapons) became appropriated by the United Systems Military. Other parts of The Company may still be out there, operating under other names.
ReplySlowboatPrometheus ForumThe Space JockeyApr 2, 2012
Why would a technologically advanced race bother erecting a huge representation of a human face abord their spacecraft? That seems more like the act of an individual with an unhealthy obsession (grudge?) than part of any rational plan.
Assuming the space jockey isn't just sneaking around unnoticed for the first half of the movie, it must have long dormant periods or something like that. Something happened on Earth that it isn't happy about, but it's only active for short periods separated by ages of inactivity. It's had to resort to laying a trap using the bio/genetic engineering skills in evidence in the construction of the ship itself. But it hasn't had any human specimens to work with, so the biological weapon it came up with is iterative - it doesn't achieve its most destructive form until after it encounters and adapts to its host.
ReplyZalgradisAlien Movies Forumif you could destroy the AVP movies...Apr 2, 2012
I would take AvP and Avp 2 and have them taken to the harvesting chamber where facehuggers would deposit drones into their bodies. After their merciless birthing, they would hunt down Alien Resurrection and butcher it with as much torment as possible. Alien 3 would be just fine.
ReplysilicaAlien Movies ForumWeyland-Yutani's demise?Apr 2, 2012
the Predators? ;)
likening the history of the use of spacecraft to the history of the use of computers...one day, large companies lost their monopoly, with their big vacuum tube machines and their government contracts, and the personal computer was born. After that, the development of computing (space travel) was driven by individual pioneers as much as by big firms....

I think the later entry says a lot.
Based on recent classified findings by Weyland researchers, the company determines the exact coordinates of a new destination for long-time pet project: Project Prometheus. New round of investment is immediately opened and mission planning enters full-swing.
January 1, 2073
To me this indicates that they are going to an entirely new planet recently discovered, not Acheron, a planet which was discovered 44 years previously.
I also have an idea that this will not have a direct tie in to the Derelict craft on Acheron, or explain specifically what went wrong with it. You will just be able to surmise what probably happened after seeing Prometheus.
From the entire corporate timeline, one gets the impression that Weyland is intent on making a profit from whatever they can discover in the universe. Since they have received other pings back, and also discovered planets, it seems to me that the signal from the derelict was probably finally heard on earth by Weyland. The acquistion of private and government agencies and technologies illustrated in the timeline leaves me to believe that they have a monopoly on these sorts of things.
A quick check of which ships would pass closest to Acheron in the near future would have allowed Weyland execs to hash out Order 937, and quickly switch out the Science officer on the USS Nostromo with Ash, before it departed.

"MAY 14TH, 2039 - DISCOVERY OF ACHERON LV-426
Weyland astronomers discover multiple moons and a ringed planet just outside the Zeta 2 Reticuli system, which are possibly able to support life. Weyland expects to travel there within the century."
There a few things I would take from this...
1) Acheron/LV-426 is one of these moons and likely, one of its smallest.
2) I've become increasing convinced, though not entirely, that the planet in 'Prometheus' is a different moon from Acheron/LV-426.
3) Given that the planet and its moons are known celestial bodies and that it is also believed they could be habitable, it may not have been prudent to mount a journey to the system until the discovery of the 'star map' pictogram found in civilizations all over the world clearly depicting THAT system when applied to actual star charts.

I know I already posted on this thread but, one spacecraft(and pilot) deserves honorable mention. gotta be the un-named A-wing pilot from I believe ROTJ. He's doing his thing, flying around, kicking arse when he gets hit and then corkscrews at full throttle into a Star Destroyer's command deck. straight up, galactic-kamikaze style. what a way to go.

2001 Discovery for its accuracy. Although the centrifuge was too small to be viable, it did present this mode of artificial gravity for the first time in SciFi. I also liked the ship's "spine" as a store house for the systems consumables. They did their homework on this one.

It's possible someone connected with Weyland was up to no good and tried to take something of theirs. Just like when they wanted the Xenomorph. This could be why the space jockeys are hostile.
