I'm not sure if this is cannon, but it would change a few things. This is a rare pack of Blade Runner ERTL 1:64 toy cars. They've been a source of playful controversy ever since they hit the store shelves around the time the movie was released in 1982. They either didn't make very many or they were taken off store shelves because the age bracket they were selling to didn't see the movie. The package says "For ages 3 and older" so I know I'm safe...just gotta remember not to chew on them ;) There's four cars in the set I have. Deckards Spinner,Deckards Ground Car,Rachels Spinner(??) and Bryants Ground car. They're still covered in the factory plastic wrap...get close and you can almost smell the Cindy Lauper, Duran Duran and Pat Benatar hits of that era ;) Here's some pics Rachel's Spinner :) Deckards Chase Spinner Rear view..notice Deckards Spinner doesn't have any top lights like Rachel's does..hmmmmm? ;) Deckards Spinner also has his name on the side...easier to find it at the LAPD parking lot ;) Close up of Rachels Spinner and Bryants tricked out ground car just ready to go to the local discotheques ;) and a close up of Deckards Ground Car :) Bonus vehicle that explains a few things. Johnny Lightning came out with a version of one of the Blade Runner film cars. but its labelled "Galactic Cruiser"...hmmm...this tells me a few things ;)

I almost forgot about the box :o The back has a picture of Deckard and Rachel with pretty good descriptions of each character. Under the box is a mail away offer to a Blade Runner Souvenir magazine(Canadians have to pay an extra dollar, but what the heck,I would have :) )

brilliant that you preserve these items for the future. when i saw the film at the cinema in 1982, I would have been 15 and too old to know about these toys, and if I was a little bit younger, I probably would have played with them instead of preserving them as would be the rule now, so excellent find sir Fishkettlebanana :D

WOW, wish I had a set! I wonder how many of those sets were wrecked by young kids, almost makes me cry! :( Fantastic and thanks for always sharing your cool stuff with us! :-)

ERTL_Toys_t620.jpg Above was the ad that was at the back of the BR Souvenir Magazine

I did eventually pick-up the toy cars myself. The first person that I knew that had them, invited me over to see them, and I somehow broke the wheel-off on one of the Spinners. He also tried to shove the book "The Joy of Sex" into my face, too. :O Nobody wanted the cars when they were originally for sale, in most stores they just sat there. Again, another BR product that wound-up in clearance-bins (< $3.00 (US) for all in 1983).

Compared to other brands of Die-cast cars this size, these ERTL weren't very well-made, also quite easy to damage (especially the Police spinners), if one played with them. Mine are in storage, glowing-n-the-dark, someplace in Japan; although, I did take them out of their packaging when I purchased them. They spent their time on a shelf, and if anyone touched them I made a fuss for them to be careful, to not break the wheels.

I don't remember where I read it, but the idea among the crew was that the Alfa Romeo Spinner was indeed Rachel's. And maybe that's as canon as it gets. The model can be seen during the trip to Tyrell's in the film. The Spinner was said to be inspired from the Alfa Romeo Navajo. And almost just the same, Deckard's ground car design may have been influenced by the Alfa Romeo Carabo; however, that's simply speculative.

I dare you to play with the Police Spinners.

Thanks djrees56.

I now see that there is some confusion, on your box about what Spinner is Rachel's. I guess that mistake has to be worth something, too. Whatever you do ...don't open it, and start to play (may cost you millions, in the end).

Thanks for the kind words folks :) I broke down and finally bought this set from another collector on Evilbay just recently ;) I am tempted to play with them Sawa :)..but I'll head Fishkettlebanana's advice and leave them as is. They've been wrapped in plastic for close to 30 years so they'd probably disintegrate if I ever removed the plastic ;) Thanks for pointing out the error on the box Sawa...now all I have to do is wait and a fortune will be mine...MoooHaHa!!(rubbing hands together ;) ) Looking at the filming miniature of the Alfa Romeo I'm actually kind of impressed about ERTL's replicating it for the toy. I'm not surprised to hear about the bad quality of the toy cars.ERTL used to have the contract to make all the Star Trek hobby model kits.I can tell you first hand that they used really lousy plastic. The bigger model pieces were almost always warped with flashing(plastic that needs to be trimmed off)that went on till the cows came home :)

Do what you feel is right, of course. Besides, there is a strong possibility that you'd become emotionally attached to them (despite their faults), once opened. Anyway, it's not like it's people imprisoned inside that packaging for 30+ years.

Animism (from Latin animus, -i "soul, life") is the worldview that natural physical entities including animals, plants, and often even inanimate objects or phenomena possess a spiritual essence. :O For example, Shinto, the traditional religion of Japan, is highly animistic. In Shinto, spirits of nature, or Kami, are believed to exist everywhere, from the major (such as The Goddess of the Sun), which can be considered polytheistic, to the minor, which are more likely to be seen as a form of animism.

It's just that Hyomin #9, hasn't got long to live.

I do believe at the time they were originally sold, there was certainly an ampule supply of these replicas (at least in NY, and CA states). I did see them around for years, as some places (like Drug, Grocery Stores, Gas Stations, etc) that sold them, didn't clear them out. I don't recall seeing the 'Gift Set' that you have very often, though.

Even though, the quality wasn't there, these made a nice display item for my bedroom, for many years. Once my guest noticed them, there'd be a short discussion about BR. And then, followed-up by a viewing of the film on videotape (I would serve Grilled-Cheese sandwiches (either ham or bacon inside), with Pop, midway through); especially, if they'd not ever seen the film before. At the very least, I'm comforted by the fact you want to play with them.

Thanks djrees56.

You know, after reading Sawa's comment about Shinto I was tempted to open them up and release the spirits of quality challenged toys(and also make a grilled cheese sandwich...with bacon :) )...but after viewing Svanya's post I think I'll leave them in the factory wrap for a little longer....not that I have an urge to have a relationship with toy cars...I still have a few in my collection from when I was a kid...I never even kissed them...chewed on them...but never kissed them. Anyway, gotta hit the sack...talk to everyone soon :) Bonus link: Queen- I'm in Love with my Car

I did find an Canadian-made do***entary, on the what Svanya is very concerned about (a love that has no name). However, I don't believe there is anything wrong with dinky car sex (or Hot Wheelin'). And provided that one stays away from the tunnels.

Although, I do figure they need to be removed from their protective condom, or you cannot feel sensations from the wheels. It would be kinda weird rubbing a box on your female partner, don't you think?

It's OK ...set them free, Mr. Sweety djrees56.

My instincts are telling me not to add to this thread anymore but what the heck ;) I'd like to leave them in they're condoms...I mean factory wrap to preserve them...I also don't know were they've been. My experience using toys against there true nature has led to things that are out of control or even embarrassing... [img][/img] but maybe I can figure a way to use the toys natural charisma to impress women...gonna have to research this :) [img][/img]
