Star Trek has always been about diversity (the original series featured on the the first interracial kisses on television) so it's great to see this year's blockbuster movie Star Trek Beyond continuing to embrace the franchise's openness to boldly go where few other huge series go before by introducing its first LGBT character.
That's right, Jon Cho's Hikaru Sulu will be depicted as being gay in the film. He'll have a male partner with whom he's raising his daughter. Cho himself is straight, but George Takei, who played Sulu in the original series, has become a gay icon over the years.
Hopefully, Star Trek Beyond's inclusion of a gay character will pursuade other blockbusters to be more open to diversity.
