Monsters or Aliens in Pacific Rim?

Chris
AdminAtmanOct-22-2012 9:22 PM2956 Views23 RepliesGuillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim is based on a battle between giant sea monsters known as Kaiju and giant human piloted mech-warriors. Now, the question of this topic is - do you think the Kaiju are native to Earth? Possibley genetic experiments gone wrong? Like Godzilla? Or do you think the Kaiju come from another world, making them Alien?

It was confirmed that the Kaiju are from the Anteverse, an older parent universe on the other side of the Interstice. This old screenplay can answer your other questions. As far as I know this has not been changed in the final script. Hope you enjoy!

I always thought the "monsters" were somehow linked to a Lovecraftian lore. Like "Ancient Ones".
I am really excited to hear what voice actress Ellen McLain will sound like for the "Jaeger A.I.". For those that don't know she played GLaDOS in the Portal games. Says on her Filmography that she was cast.

No problem Chris. I still have an odd feeling that some form of Ancient One will make an appearance. Cthulhu perhaps? Or someone more obscure?

No idea, but it all sounds very "epic" to scale. Been a while since we had a real solid "Giant Monster" movie, I'm hoping Pacific Rim can live up to expectations!

True. The closest thing we have had recently to a giant monster film would probably be Cloverfield. It might not have been spectacular, but the monster was cool. However I absolutely loved the movie Monsters (2010) by Gareth Edwards! In fact Gareth is the director for the new Godzilla film!

I'm new to the whole Kaiju mythology, but this film looks like it might be EPIC.

First off, I've never seen the Biollante movie but it's a very cool creature. Having read enough of the script to get a description of one of the monsters, it appears to be an apt choice! The first creature is a giant tarantula/ dragon hybrid that sheds its hair like a rain of arrows ( at least in this draft). Holy cow. Ive been a japanese monster freak for decades. I am PSYCHED. Thank you AgentMothman! Awesome avatar BTW.

@Major Noob - Biollante was a bad mother, you should check out the movie! And yes, Pacific Rim looks like it will be a real thrill ride!
@AgentMothman - I'm looking forward to Gareth Edwards' Godzilla film! It also sounds like it's going to be a fantastic reboot.

Yeah speaking of Godzilla, Chris, when will the Godzilla site be created?
Also Del Toro said the kaiju are silicon based and you don't dare kill them, they are perfect traps.
October 30, 2012
I'm afraid I never heard anything about them being silicon based. Perhaps I missed this somewhere.

Are you sure you are not thinking of the Xenemorph from Alien, because it too was silicon based and had acidic blood. In fact this is mentioned no where in the screenplay, but perhaps this is a new addition...

On that origin, he explained that ”The Kaiju are created as perfect traps. They’re not carbon-based organisms. They’re silicon-based organisms. It takes a while to figure out something that is not carbon-based. They decompose and release an agent called Kaiju Blue that completely destroys the cities, makes air impossible to breathe and their blood is completely acidic.”

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. Do you have link or something to the statement?

Thanks Juju. So it would seem Juggernaut is indeed right. The whole Kaiju Blue thing is interesting.
