Why Armor?

Just a quick thought--Why do the characters wear armor? If their Jaeger is heavily damaged and the pilots are exposed, they would have little chance to defend themselves from any of the monsters, even in an armored suit. Maybe the armor is integral to how the Jaegers are piloted. Maybe they'll function as space suits/pressure suits. But then you have to wonder how a monster might propel itself high enough into the atmosphere to warrant the need for humans to have such a suit.

I am pretty sure it is for the control of the Jaeger itself. Plus why wouldn't you want a protective suit?

the armor is connected to the telemetry of the Jaeger.

It maybe functional but I hope it is light weight.. The left shoulder on the right man looks like a series of hook ups to the robots.

Its all neural connections based and the movements the pilot does the jeager does.

I read an interview somewhere where they said it decided that the pilots must feel the "pain" of the jaeger in order to make better decisions during the heat of battle. I guess the "armor" also acts as a feedback mechanism for the pilots as well.

Not to mention that a machine this complex probably has plenty of dangers all its own during battle. Broken electrical cables, steam blasting out of pipes, radiation leaks, ricocheting debris....chances are the suits are lightly armored to deal with battle damage.
