Mothra Trilogy

MemberGiganMay-14-2020 10:57 AMRemember this string of movies, in the 90s. I was interested in how other people felt About these films.
To me, the Mothra Trilogy, is kind of childish. It was like the mid/late Showa films. Which isn’t a bad thing. I just wish it was a little more serious. I appreciated the messages the first two films had, but the third one just threw in Ghidorah. Not that It was a bad decision, it just felt like a cash grab. They’re fun to watch, but not my favorite.
Also, I have no idea if they are canon to Hesei, does one of you know?

AdminGodzillaMay-14-2020 11:52 AMI consider them among the worst movies of the kaiju genre. The second film in particular is almost unwatchable.
Now, based on that curve, I find the third film the most enjoyable. Koichi Kawakita did the effects for the first two movies and they were quite bland. Kenji Suzuki took over by the third movie and his effects had a new feel to it. I don't think they were particularly great effects by any means, but his techniques breathed some much needed fresh air into the trilogy's visuals. (Especially after watching 10 years of Kawakita's work.)
And no, the Mothra trilogy has nothing to do with the Heisei Godzilla series or the original 1961 Mothra. The monsters are much smaller in the Mothra films and the trilogy stands alone in its own continuity.

AdminGodzillaMay-14-2020 1:06 PMThe second film has a myriad of problems, from the design work to the slow pacing, the abysmal special effects work - the fact it has only one primary and relatively cheap miniature set - the horrid acting (though none of them had a lot to work with, granted) - the painfully hamfisted environmental message - There's a difference between the children's films of the mid-70s and absolute kiddie-fodder. This is the latter.

MemberMothra LarvaeMay-20-2020 10:30 AMThe third film's message was about healing the bonds of family, and to some extent returning to society something I can relate to as I was that kid who skipped school some of it is I started having panic attacks in crowds some of it because my K-12 experience was FUBAR and not something I like to talk or think about.
To me, the films were meant to be a bit more light-hearted than the Heisei era Godzilla films as they were geared more towards younger audiences well the Heisei Godzilla films were geared more toward older fans well still being family-friendly enough for kids to enjoy.
overall ya the films are cheesy but the fact that I own the Bluray box set and them on Itunes shows I enjoy watching them them from time to time.
