A challenge for the movie buffs!!

Many years ago (40+) I remember seeing a clip of a very old science fiction movie that for some reason has stayed with me...I'm not sure why?

If you can name this film from my scant memory you have my eternal gratitude and rightly consider yourself a movie buff indeed!

It showed a man sitting on his bed staring out of a window. I think I recall he had his arm around his dog. A light appeared as if from far, far away and enveloped him. He was then transported to another planet (in the light?) where a crowd of it's inhabitants cheered and applauded the event.

That's my memory of it from a long time ago and I may be incorrect in some of the few details.....please put my mind to rest....I must see this film!
