Fun idea I saw on Facebook. Tell us your favorite Godzilla film from each decade. GO!

1950s: Godzilla (1954)

1960s: Monster Zero

1970s: Terror of MechaGodzilla

1980s: The Return of Godzilla (This fluctuates w/ Godzilla vs. Biollante depending on the day.)

1990s: Godzilla 2000 (Although it could be Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah... I need to rewatch it. It's one of these two. Or an enema...)

2000s: Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack

2010s: Shin Godzilla

I haven't seen any of the movies from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s, but I did see the ones from the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s (When they were still on Hulu. Remember that?). So here's mine by each decade:

1990s: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (Because the Back to the Future trilogy helped me understand the time travel plot of this film.)

2000s: For this, it's between Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (Because I have both versions of the Neca figure for this Godzilla. I got them from Toys R Us as Christmas gifts.) or Godzilla: Final Wars

2010s: For this, it's either Godzilla (2014) [Because I have the 6-inch version of the Neca figure for this Godzilla. I also got this from Toys R Us as a Christmas gift.] or Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)

And that's about it for me. Sorry if it is short.

My list is fairly similar to yours Gman. (Side note, how do we tag things the site, I still haven't figured it out)

1950's: Godzilla (1954)

1960's: Monster Zero, I wonder if this makes a clear distinction to the Japanese version, Invasion of Astro-Monster. Nick Adams helps make this movie legendary.

1970's: Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (I still haven't seen the Japanese version of Terror of MechaGodzilla since its expensive as holy hell, so this is subject to change.)

1980's: I'll just say The Return of Godzilla to be definitive, but it's definitely a toss up with Biollante.

1990's: Godzilla 2000

2000's: GMK

2010's: Shin Godzilla, though King of the Monsters has me very hopeful. If it brings me back to that special place in my childhood it will take this spot, the movie doesn't even have to be that good or deep. I say this only because I want a modern "easy watch" Godzilla movie. I have to be in certain states of mind to watch 2014, Shin, or the anime movies.

The Legend of Brian,

Tagging largely comes down to copying and pasting screen names and linking stuff from existing sites. I just did it for distinction.

1950’s: Gojira (1954)

Do I even have to explain why this is my favorite of the decade?

1960’s: Ghidorah, the three-headed monster (1964)

Great human plot an the introduction of my all time favorite Godzilla enemie.

1970’s: Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)

Overall one of my favorite Godzilla battles in the franchise, introduces Mechagodzilla and still has an interesting plot.

1980’s: Godzilla vs Biollante (1989)

One of the best and most unique kaiju in the franchise, biollante just steals the show for me in this movie.

1990’s: Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1993)

One of the best human stories in the franchise whilst still including some great kaiju action and a great new take on King Ghidorah.

2000's: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)

I have never had so much fun watching a Godzilla movie like this one. The effects are incredibly in this movie, the fights are Great and the human story (though not as good as the ”Godzilla against Mechagodzilla”) is still fun to watch.

2010’s: Godzilla (2014) (though ”king of the monsters” is looking even better from what we have seen already)

Even though the buildup for the ending was at some points frustrating, the end fight makes up for that. A great american reimagining of the king of the monsters.

Long live the king...

Honestly, I went on a Hulu binge last year when they had the Halloween marathon and they started to blend together. The ones that really stood out to me were the one(s?) with Mecha Godzilla and anything with Mothra.

I cannot recall the actual names of the movies or years since the history is so long. I am sort of waiting for KOTM as I am for The Predator- not getting too excited but waiting to buy them since I am feeling they will be really good.

1950’s - Gojira

1960’s - King Kong vs. Godzilla

1970’s - Terror of MechaGodzilla

1980’s - Godzilla vs. Biollante

1990’s - Godzilla vs. Destroyah (or Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah)

2000’s - Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S.

2010’s - Godzilla 2014 (Easily looks like Godzilla king of the monsters will surpass this)

@G. H. (Gman) Something I forgot to mention. I did see Ebirah, Horror of the Deep 4 years ago, but I don't remember much of it. I might need to rewatch it again. Plus I have a VHS of King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), so I might see that. Other than that, yeah, I need a lot of catching up to do.

My list goes like this:

1950s: Gojira (1954)

The only other competitor in this decade is Godzilla Raids Again.

1960s: Monster Zero (1965)

Great plot with visiting another planet plus Kumi Mizuno in her prime.

1970s: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

First introduction of Mechagodzilla, even if it's not a flawless one.

1980s: Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)

Had a hard time with this one. I really like The Return of Godzilla for its tone, but Godzilla vs. Biollante is more engaging in terms of plot and human characters.

1990s: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)

My all-time favourite: time travel, bubble economy, evil futurians, android, and Mecha-King Ghidorah.

2000's: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)

This movie grew on me over the years. The human story is a mixed bag, but I loved Kiryu and the fights. Michiru Oshima also provided awesome music score. Close second is Tokyo SOS.

2010s: Godzilla (2014) (so far)

I have re-watched it recently, because of the King of the Monsters trailer, and still found it as enjoyable as when I first checked it out in the theatre. I respect Shin Gojira for the risks it took, but it's not that entertaining to me.

It's cool to see that everyone's lists are pretty similar.

1950s: Gojira (1954)

Because there's really no contest when the only other from the decade is Godzilla raids again.

1960s: Invasion of Astro-Monster (1964)

Ghidorah, the three-headed monster is really close, though.

1970s: Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)

I know it's not exactly a fan-favorite, but for some reason, I love it. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla is a close second, and I really wish I could see the Japanese version of Terror of Mechagodzilla.

1980s: Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)

Probably because it was the very last classic Godzilla movie I saw, but The Return of Godzilla just doesn't really do it for me.

1990s: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)

Godzilla goes meltdown and fights his arguably most powerful enemy. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah is probably better plot-wise and human-wise, but the last fight in Destroyah is awesome.

2000s: Final Wars (2004)

I loved this movie so much as a kid because of how it makes Godzilla so powerful, and now I realize how silly and weird it is, but the monster action is still enough for me.

2010s: Godzilla (2014)

Shin Godzilla has some cool moments and interesting concepts, but I have to feel a certain way to watch it. At this point, I'm 99% sure King of the Monsters will take the spot as my favorite when it comes out.

I guess my favorites are more based on nostalgia and monster fights than most, but oh well.

1950s: Godzilla (1954): This shouldn't be surprising. While I do like Anguirus, it isn't enough to make Raids Again better than the original.

1960s: Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965): I really want to say Destroy All Monsters, but I think Astro Monster is a better stand alone film.

1970s: Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971): I love this film. This is an easy pick for me. Sadly, I also really like the Mechagodzilla films, especially Terror of Mechagodzilla.

1980s: Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989): This one is a hard pick. I like both this and The Return of Godzilla, but I give this the edge for it being something new and different.

1990s: Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991): This is my least favorite decade. I don't like Destroyah. I don't like Space Godzilla. All the others are "meh". This one is at least interesting with time travel and robots. This is the only one of all those I can actually remember the human plot.

2000s: Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001): This seems to be the decade of me liking each of these films, but for different reasons and different parts of the films; As well as hating specific parts of each film.  Godzilla: Final Wars can be fun, but the music ruins almost all of it. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is great until the other giant monster actually shows up. GMK had an interesting idea for Godzilla and we get to see the monsters used in unusual ways.

2010s: Shin Godzilla (2016): I don't hate the American film, I just found it boring after Cranston died. Shin I found to be an excellent Godzilla film and an actual good film. The satire and humor is great.

Mines would have to be

1950s: Goijira (1954)

1960s: Mothra Vs Godzilla (1964)

1970s: Terror Of Mechagodzilla (1975)

1980s: The Return Of Godzilla (1984)

2000s: Godzilla, Mothra And King Ghidorah Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2001)

2010s: Shin Godzilla (2016)

2010 may change if I really enjoy Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (2019)

1950's: Gojira (1954)

Vastly superior to the other 50's Godzilla film in just about every way.

1960's: (From what I've seen) Destroy All Monsters (1968)

Really like the monster destruction scenes and the final battle. The story's pretty interesting too.

1970's: (From what I've seen) Terror of Mechagodzilla

Not a huge fan of the three 70's films I've seen, but the Mechagodzilla films are decent. Of the two, I'd say ToMG is better.

1980's: Only seen 84 so I guess that's it

1990's: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)

Always liked GvD. However, only 90's films I haven't seen are Spacegodzilla and 1998 and I doubt they're better.

2000's: Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2001)

Not sure if it's my favorite or second favorite Godzilla film out of the ones I've seen. The characters, story, and monsters are all nice.

2010's: (So far) Shin Godzilla (2016)

My third favorite Godzilla film. Given the rest of the decade's Godzilla films aren't really good, SG is the best 2010's Godzilla film imo.

Sci-Fi King25 Will your opinion change when GKOTM comes out, or will SG still be your favorite for the 2010's?

MinecraftDinoKaiju,
How can anyone answer that question until they see the movie. To everyone prematurely listing Godzilla: King of the Monsters--What if it sucks?

I giggle a little at everyone listing it without even seeing it because it reminds me of the weird cult of fans that swore to me the 2014 film would be the greatest Godzilla film of all time half a year before the release--Even dreaming of Oscar potential. Then it came out and it wasn't. Funny how I never heard from any of them again after May 16th, 2014...

Guys, I know some of you are excited. But listing Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) as a favorite Godzilla movie 10 months before you see it is moronic.

MemberBaragonAug-11-2018 1:34 AM

I agree with the sentiment Gman, but I think it's just nice to be excited. The world has gone to poo lately, its OK to hope for a good movie and get a bit ahead of ourselves. It can't be worse than 1998. Plus it can't be denied outside of the Comic-Con teaser with the camera guy, the marketing has been on point, even more so than 2014.

I doubt it'll be a better movie than Shin, which I personally would consider it genre redefining, but if KOTM ends up being a really watchable (pop in and enjoy type) movie, then I'll be more than satisfied, though I would want it to be more than watchable.

AdminGodzillaAug-11-2018 3:26 PM

The Legend of Brian,
I don't expect the movie to suck, but the possibility is certainly there. The thing is I'm literally watching history repeat itself. Does it look good? Absolutely! Does that mean it's already a favorite? Well it can't be because I haven't seen it yet. This mentality reminds me of this scene:
