MemberBaragonSep-04-2017 12:06 PMI'm wondering how all of you feel about the topic of how will this current run of Godzilla films will be referred to.
We've had the Showa, Heisei, and Millennium series thus far, but what do we call this?
I think it's an issue if we're going to differentiate the Monsterverse and the Toho films. The gut reaction would be yes of course it's different, but it may be confusing to newcomers trying to understand the various runs of Godzilla films. On that note, are we going to refer to the current Toho movies as the "Toho Reboot" as I've seen in some places? It just seems out of place with the titles we've given the other series of films.
I definitely want to hear what you guys think. I have my own idea on how this could work. When referring to the current movies, both the Monsterverse and Toho movies, I think we can put them in the same category.
Ex: Showa, Heisei, Millennium, (Monsterverse, Toho)
Now what do we call the new Toho films and the series overall?
I would like to propose we it the Legendary era. Now this is only partly for the Legendary film company bringing us the Monsterverse. It's arguable that they've made Godzilla more popular now than ever and that all the films coming out in the near future is thanks to them. However I think Legendary is an apt term because of the financial and critical success of both Godzilla (2014) and Shin Godzilla with Planet of Monsters and the future Monsterverse movies hopefully following suit.
Then when talking about the two different runs of films it would be the "Legendary Monsterverse" and the "Legendary Toho" series. I hope what I'm trying to say is coming off clear.
Ex: Showa series , Heisei series, Millennium series,
Legendary Series
(Legendary Monstervers, Legendary Toho)
This may turn out to be more confusing than just totally looking at the Monsterverse and the Toho Reboot as separate entities, but I thought it would make for an interesting discussion. Let me know!

Damn that's 100% better than what I was thinking.

MemberBaragonSep-04-2017 7:02 PMI tend to count the MonsterVerse and newer Toho movies as completely separate "eras" in the Godzilla series. They may overlap time-wise, but they're largely unconnected outside of featuring Godzilla. I personally call the Toho films "Post-Millennium era," at least until Toho gives them an official name, while I've seen some Japanese websites refer to them as "Phase Four" or "2010's series." Either way, I don't think they should be considered one and the same as the MonsterVerse. It would be like counting GODZILLA (1998) as part of the Millennium series.
