MemberFacehuggerJun-07-2017 6:05 AMInteresting read.

After eight films over nearly four decades, Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant” may be proof positive that the time for this franchise has passed. Ridley Scott plans at least two more sequels to the “Prometheus” portion of the “Alien” saga, but current returns make that look like a risky proposition.
“Alien: Covenant” will be one of the franchise’s lowest-grossing entries, second only to 2007’s “Aliens Vs. Predator – Requiem,” which made $52 million domestic in adjusted numbers. Three weeks in, “Alien: Covenant” is at $67 million domestic against a $97 million budget; after Japan and China open, expect it to hit about $300 million worldwide, which means theatrical won’t be enough for it to break even.
A Disappointment, But Not a Flop… Yet
The total take for the film among countries where it has opened will be around $200 million. However, its two biggest potential markets, Japan and China, have yet to open. Foreign returns are tough to project — particularly China, where the franchise has limited history. But they could boost the ultimate total closer to $300 million.
With a $97 million reported production budget and at least that in marketing, theatrical alone won’t come close to paying off. But later revenues could make it close to making that back. Consider this a work in progress.
I suggest fans that like the movie to go see it again. lol

MemberFacehuggerJun-07-2017 6:36 AMA little bit of disappointment about the movie and the box office to be sure..
But, I'll go see it a few more times...However, because I am a cheapass and I hit the dollar movies, not sure how much I am contributing:)

MemberFacehuggerJun-07-2017 7:06 AMNo worries Sunwhited you did your part as I did mine! Did Ridley do his? Idk the dust is gonna have to settle. Interesting times we live in however $10 for a matinee is just a sign of the times. I'd say the TWO films are dead and the likely hood of just ONE more story. It was a good effort just a little misguided. Never Ever will xenomorphs be extinct!

MemberFacehuggerJun-07-2017 8:45 AMI have already seen it three times....But ok. I will go and see it once again. THERE HAS TO BE ANOTHER MOVIE! :)

MemberNeomorphJun-07-2017 11:35 AMThat's not a review. This is a review

Mark Kermode, Every single word that he says, it's like he's read my mind.
And in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PitTXwbhx5U
his closing words are absolutely spot on. And is the main reason that Ridley should never have started on his prequel journey imo.
P.S. When he says " we are food" (I laughed at that part) he doesn't mean that literally. He means that we are dead meat.
The poster was good though!

MemberFacehuggerJun-07-2017 11:49 AM@Necronom 4. Thanks for the link.
This review encapsulates what most of us on this forum think of AC.
I especially can relate to the part about Leaving the movie with a heavy heart...

MemberNeomorphJun-07-2017 12:01 PM@suwhited; You're very welcome. I'm guessing that you (like me) felt like the original intention was somehow cheapened by this latest instalment?
The poster was good though!

MemberFacehuggerJun-07-2017 12:18 PM@Necronom 4. Ridley's fascination with rogue androids and a poor script did this franchise in.
We could have gotten past Ridley's "I-Robot" fetish, but the writer(s) need to be publicly flogged...repeatedly for this dog of a script.
So much potential but with mediocre results. Don't get me wrong...it's not bad like "Battlefield Earth" but it just didn't reach what us fans were expecting...

MemberOvomorphJun-07-2017 12:21 PMDont worry Alien covenant will star broadcasting in China 16 june and Chinese will save the movie.
Prometheus was not broadcast in China so i think it will go very well.
covenant is allready more watched in South Korea than was Prometheus.
and allot od countries around the world didnt update their box office 1 week or more.
Sorry for my bad English :)

MemberOvomorphJun-07-2017 12:40 PMhmmmm...I heard estimates it was more like 50 million that was spent on marketing and given that math 240 million was likely the break even point I know on Covenant they didn't expect to do Prometheus numbers, which did 403 million world wide. 100 million on marketing for a 97 million dollar movie seems extreme, but what do I know.

Jafo
MemberOvomorphJun-07-2017 3:44 PMPrometheus was actually released in China, not sure why it's not listed on the Box Office sites though. If you did an internet search and did a little you can find box office numbers. It did over 30 million in China

MemberOvomorphJul-05-2017 3:09 PMI have one question.
Ridley Scott have his own production house Scoot free productions ?
And Fox owned the Alien franchise ?
Who give the money for budget for alien Covenant Scott production house or Fox ?

MemberFacehuggerJul-06-2017 5:06 AMWhy do people keep jumping between extremes here? Why does it always have to be 1) MAKE SIX MORE ALIEN MOVIES ABOUT DAVID HERP-DERP or 2) THE SAGA IS DEAD, NO MORE ALIEN MOVERS FOREVAAAARRRRRR!!!! Seriously why the fuck do famous people in the public eye act like such moronic mouth-breathers around any topic regarding the ALIEN series. So sick of this crap.

MemberChestbursterJul-06-2017 7:11 AMDefinitely not dead for me and many others. I liked Covenant, but I want Ridley to get back on track and continue with the Engineer/David story!
That article and those box office numbers are old. It still has to open in Japan, but that is not until September. It is sitting at around 231 million and will bring in another 5-10 million over the next few months, but the theatrical run is essentially finished.

MemberNeomorphJul-06-2017 10:47 PMi would say as things stand right now, the alien franchise is at a cross roads and all hangs on the next instalment. AC was one of the most hotly anticipated movies of recent times and the potential and theories of how ridley was going to go were endless, esp on here. then the movie hit and simply put, didn't live up to expectations. id say even those who say they like it would agree it wasn't AS good as they were expecting. for me the pace of the movie was all wrong with no character building what so ever, which is unlike RS. maybe those who cried out in displeasure at Prometheus for not being 'alien' enough had an adverse effect? I certainly think Prometheus has gained more respect now after AC. people WILL go to watch awakening or what ever it will be called after RS has changed his mind AGAIN. the studio will cut even at the very least and probably make a little profit but how much I believe depends on how much they loosen the ropes on ridley to just make the movie he wants. if it fails to deliver then id say the franchise needs shelved for the sake of its future. someone else can come along in a decade or so and put their own spin on it perhaps, give us a semi reboot?

MemberFacehuggerJul-07-2017 7:12 AMThey need to get a new director and fresh writing on board. All of this watered-down CRAP has got to GO!

Starlogger
MemberChestbursterJul-07-2017 7:31 AMMaybe the next movie will be called "Awakening" and we learn that the events of Alien:Covenant were all just a horrible dream that one of the colonists had while in cryosleep!
THAT could be done realistically and allow us a different path than the one we are on, if RS and Fox so choose...

MemberFacehuggerJul-07-2017 7:42 AMMight as well say Alien 3 was partially a dream too and bring back Hicks. They should do something creative with it, though. Like tie it into the comics and have it something to do with the Queen's ability to mind-rape people like in the comics
