ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS!

If there is one thing I learned post PROMETHEUS, it is to avoid being influenced and jaded by other people’s opinions.

Before I actually had my first viewing of PROMETHEUS I was pretty shocked, upset and demoralised by the opinions of some people on this site. People I liked, respected and had some rappor with suddenly appeared to change and their decades long love for Sir Ridley went out the window and was replaced by venom and hostility.

That was what worried, upset and concerned me the most. I could not conceive of myself being in that situation. What if I hated PROMETHEUS? What if Sir Ridley really had “lost it“?

So, on the day of my first viewing, as the FOX logo and the music rolled, I sat there, nervously wiping my sweaty paws, clearing my throat and feeling very shaky.

Afterwards I felt slightly numb and I definitely needed time to process my thoughts and feelings. However, I was actually blown away by much of what I had seen and I could not compute that feeling versus some of the things I had read.

Anyway, it turned out that I really liked PROMETHEUS. I understand some of the criticism, but for the most part I regard it is a flawed masterpiece, I really feel that time will prove me correct in that estimation. My second viewing I went in normal and really enjoyed the experience.

Reviews from any media never really interested me and they still don’t. I mean both A L I E N and BladeRunner in particular, took some harsh criticism in their day and are now deservedly regarded as influential classics.

Yes, many of you will say that it was stupid to become so emotional and bothered by others opinions and I can agree with that, NOW. At the time it was very different, because the love we felt for A L I E N and Sir Ridley, plus the joy over his return to Science Fiction after all those years was what brought us together. It was literally a dream come true and that seemed to be reflected on site, where for the most part everyone was ecstatic, elated and amongst like-minded friends.

The PROMETHEUS aftermath proved very different. What did bother and affect me at the time, were the feelings of people whom I regarded as peers and friends. Many of them left the site, never to return, which greatly saddened me.

This time around I am different, or at least my mindset is. That’s why I couldn’t care less about official reviews or anyone else’s opinion until I have witnessed A L I E N: COVENANT for myself. I don’t have the same pre-viewing excitement, nor expectations as back then, but I am more confident and realistic about what Ridley can achieve, given the restrictions placed upon him by the studio and a need to appease the PROMETHEUS nay-sayers, whilst not abandoning that films themes.

Lets all go in and be thankful for another chance to witness a Master Filmmaker doing what he does best!

At the end of the day, all that really matters is how YOU feel about A L I E N: COVENANT.

Trust me, we were shocked by some reactions too. Staff even got death threats, it was a strange time. I'm hoping this time around people will respect each others opinions. <3

Times have changed, and unfortunately  (pardon my military) SRS can fill the fuel tank with most delicious fuel in production only to have his fuel system gutted by the wrong propulsion system.

I blamed most of the flaws of prometheus on the hipster script (it's not LOST Damon), but at the same time it was refreshing to have to use brain power to make sense of things seen and unseen.

I am glad to be part of this group of thinkers, and I second your last point.

Lone-

My experience at that time mirrors your own, it was like one big reality check about the nature of humans, the sort only the internet could deliver.

But here we are, all the same, back for more! It's like a support group of people about to go on a dark, terribly vulnerable journey, into Ridley's ideas and our own fragile hopes, what a bizarre combination!

Glad to be sharing this with all of you. It's gonna be ok. Better than ok.

I for one was happy that this site existed prior to my initial viewing of Prometheus.  I think a lot of the frustration viewers experienced was due to the expectation that we would finally get all our answers about the space jockey and the alien.  Now some of the answers that were given clearly disappointed not a few fans, but I found the answers intriguing and the unanswered questions even more intriguing.  So I look forward to getting a few more answers in Covenant, but from what I've read so far we're still going to be left with some mysteries to solve.

That's amazing Svanya.

I didn't realize that the reaction was so strong.  The Alien: Covenant novels enriched the film for me but many didn't share the same warmth I had for the film.
