Why The Tyrannosaur Buck?

So, in The Lost World: Jurassic Park, big game hunter Roland Tembo tells Peter Ludlow all he wants is the rights to hunt one of the tyrannosaurs. He says, and I quote, "A male. Buck only." Now, this is quite interesting to me. In Jurassic Park, it's the females that are generally regarded as being bigger than the males. So why does Roland want the male? I can think of three main reasons...

1. Looks-

While the female tyrannosaurs hold the size in Jurassic Park, the males are more striking in appearance. They have big throat pouches, bigger crests, brighter colors, and often scars all over their snouts. Perhaps Roland wanted to hunt the male for that reason(like how a male lion has a big mane).

2. Ethics-

Hunters usually take males over females because it's the ethical thing to do. Roland certainly seemed like a pretty good guy(better than Ludlow at least). Maybe he just figured he should take the male over the female because of that.

3. He Didn't Know-

Or maybe Roland simply didn't know the females were larger. Perhaps he assumed based on his past expierience that the males held the size(big cats, bears, wolves, etc). He figured if he wanted the bigger individual, he'd have to hunt the male.

Like I said, I just found this interesting...

Tyrannosaurus Buck...

Tyrannosaurus Female...

I remember reading something like this on Jurassic Park Wiki.  Personally, I'll go with your first 2 explanations, because with Tembo being so smart, he would have it documented in his guide book (which you do see in The Lost World) that the female T.rex would be a bit bigger.

Besides, if you were to go hunting, which animal would you want to have as a trophy?  A male lion with a full mane, or an even larger lioness (it's rare for this to happen, but I've seen alpha lionesses tower over new male lions) that is fiercely protective of her pride sisters?  The lion of course!!

And the ethics thing...it's because the females generally care for the young more, while the males protect the group, so in the future, there will be more individuals to hunt because the mother protected them.

I put the first two, well, first, because I found them more likely ;)

They make the most sense as well, and that's why I'd be going for a buck.

I love this Rex pair too JPCerato, especially the buck.  He goes into San Diego like a boss, and is the only T.rex that I have ever seen be so compassionate about his kid and scare off a bunch of police cars!  It was so funny!

REX FAN 684 - What a very compelling notion! I'd have to say I lean more toward explanations 1 and 2. Mr. Tembo was a very cagey and intelligent indvidual; I'd be very surprised if he hadn't done his homework concerning the animal he was intending to hunt! :)

Happy to see this post was so well recieved :)

I loved how animal control arrived to stop the buck when he was in San Diego(as if that'd do it).

The male animatronic in TLW was actually larger than the female's. So the males (in JP, Maybe IRL, but that's another discussion) were larger. The male was listed at 42 feet and the female at 41, so not a big difference at all. Even though the Buck Rex was larger, I'd guess the first two as well.

But Rexy was bigger than the Buck. I'm kind of going off of what the JP Wiki says too.

True, so I'd guess they were the same size then. And I was going off of some commentary on the animatronics on the TLW behind-the-scenes stuff.

I theorized it was because the male was the one that wasn't "supposed" to be there. By asking to hunt the buck, he's not taking anything that was invested in by InGen, basically, a free Trex.

True, true. That's also possible.
