Alright, so, like most of us here, I have several theories about plot details of the upcoming movie, and I've decided to post all of my guesses based on the clues we have so far in one thread. I'm not going to bother with explaining the reasoning behind my theories, since this is going to be long enough as it is, but if anyone wants to know why I made certain guesses, I'd be happy to elaborate in a reply. Obviously this will only paint an incomplete and probably very inaccurate picture of the events of the film, but this is as much as I was able to reasonably guess with the information I know.

Our story starts circa 65 million B.C. when a giant meteor impacts in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula. Little did the paleontologists who would later study it know, this meteor contained massive amounts of some radioactive element which was spread all over the Earth by the impact, raising the radiation levels on the Earth's surface to over 10 times the natural level. This, of course, along with the climate change caused by the impact, wiped out most life on the planet, and the surviving species were forced to adapt to the radiation, darkness, and cold.

Some species did this by, rather than becoming resistant to or avoiding the radiation, feeding on it. They slowly became like living nuclear reactors, absorbing the radioactive elements in the air to fuel the reactions inside their bodies, which grew to incredible sizes in order to contain the energies they produced. In order to support their weight, their bones, muscles and skin were replaced with much stronger materials, which made them extremely durable as an added bonus. These monsters did not need to eat or breathe because they produced all the energy they needed themselves, although they did kill and eat each other in order to absorb their nuclear power and still had methods of respiration (e.g. lungs and gills) so that they could take in the radioactive elements into their bodies.

Perhaps the mightiest of the monsters were the Godzillasaurs, which evolved from semi-aquatic, freshwater-dwelling dinosaurs that, like crocodiles, escaped the K/T extinction due to their amphibious lifestyle. These powerful beasts had nearly impregnable hide even by monster standards (as well as, possibly, regenerative powers) and could release the energy of their nuclear reactor stomachs as a breath weapon of incredible heat. The only other monsters that could threaten them were the species of the mysterious "ancient foe" mentioned in one of the toy descriptions - which I will refer to as the GKM (Godzilla Killing Monster) from now on – which, unlike the other monsters, did not have to kill and eat its prey to absorb their radiation, and could instead drain it directly from them with some kind of stinger or proboscis, which would result in the victim's death. These often hunted Godzillasaurs due to their massive power.

Eventually, the monsters depleted nearly all of the radiation left over by the meteor, causing most of them to die off. However, some of them survived by going into hibernation deep under the sea or in massive cave systems, where they slept undisturbed for eons.

In 1954, Godzilla, who is possibly the only Godzillasaurus to have survived by going into hibernation, is awakened by the Castle Bravo H-bomb test, and the US military, of course, decides that they might as well use one of the nukes they're testing to kill him. It doesn't work. Being understandably a bit freaked out now, the military panics and makes several more attempts to nuke him, culminating with an H-bomb being dropped directly onto his head and still having no effect... well, no negative effect, anyway. The massive amount of radiation he absorbs from all those nuclear blasts causes his atomic breath to become incredibly powerful, and possibly boosts any regenerative abilities he may have. After rampaging through the Marshall Islands (causing them to become contaminated despite the radiation from the nuclear blasts being absorbed), Godzilla returns to the sea to hibernate once more.

Not long after this, another nuclear test awakens one of the "Mutos" sleeping in an elaborate cave system under the Nevada desert. This monster is successfully killed by another atomic bomb, and the M.U.T.O. Research Facility is established to study the Mutos as well as monitor them to make sure they stay underground. Over the next few years, several of the nuclear "tests" in this area were really Mutos that escaped the facility being put down.

In 1999, Godzilla is again awakened from his slumber when he is attacked in his sleep by the GKM, which is attracted by his massive levels of nuclear power. It manages to drain some of his energy before he escapes and seeks out a source to replenish the small fraction of his power he lost (he gets kind of greedy after gaining so much power from the nuclear tests) This brings us to the beginning of the actual film (it took long enough!), as Godzilla attacks the Janjira nuclear power plant, where Joe and Sandra Brody (Bryan Cranston and Juliette Binoche) work. Sandra is killed by a radiation leak, and Joe witnesses Godzilla himself, but no one believes him due to the US government covering it up. These events cause him to hold a grudge against both Godzilla and the government.

By 2014, Dr. Serizawa (Ken Wantanabe) either runs the M.U.T.O. Research Facility or is an important scientist there. At this time, something, possibly the testing of some anti-monster superweapon invented by Serizawa, causes the Mutos to break out of the facility en masse and proceed to ravage Las Vegas. The military attempts to kill them off without nuclear weapons, but they are fighting a losing battle, as although they are not completely immune to conventional weaponry, they still take a while to bring down that way and are quickly breeding out of control. The presence of a few flying individuals complicates things further. Pretty soon, things start to look hopeless for the Southwestern US.

Meanwhile, the GKM and Godzilla have been playing cat and mouse for the last 15 years. At around the same time the Mutos attack, Godzilla surfaces at San Francisco and proceeds to progress inland, destroying the city in the process. Being already well acquainted with the indestructible beast, the US military decides to send in paratroopers, one of them being Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), to use flares to lead Godzilla to the Mutos so he can curbstomb their puny grey a*ses. In what would be a big twist for the unsuspecting audience (which I just ruined for you if I'm right), the GKM emerges at the same place Godzilla did at around the end of the second act and takes off in hot pursuit of Godzilla.

JESUS, that was long! Well, that's as far as my theories go. Like I said, they are quite incomplete, as they mostly only cover the backstory and the beginning of the movie, and don't take into account the roles that Hawaii or Elizabeth Olsen's character play at all. What do you think of them?

That made for quite an interesting read. I like your theories, although I think the first big Godzilla reveal will come in Hawaii as this was part of teh 20 mins of footage shown by Gareth Edwards. He seemed to be showing them in chronological order (although I have nothing to back that up) but based on that here is my little theoretical rundown of the movie

- I like your origin story so lets keep that. Maybe the MUTO's hunted the Godzillasaurus' and other creatures of its kind to extinction, feeding off their nucleaur energy until the earth was bombarded with meteors, causing major climate change and driving them all underground. Wilder theory still... the meteors actually punched through the earths surface and the mutos followed the only source of rediation available to them. Godzilla, the last of his kind (or one of them) and also without a source of radiation, went into slumber at the bottom of the pacific. Millions of years later mankind harnesses atomic energy and, well, we all know what comes next.

- The tremors at the Tokyo power plant is the MUTO's burrowing their way back to the earths surface and towards the source of their precious radiation. I wouldn't be surprised if our centipede friend is responsible for this, the one we saw vanquished in the comicon teaser. Anyway, the plant vanishes into a sinkhole created by the MUTO or MUTO's taking Brodys wife with it. The MUTO's feed off the energy, lay eggs etc and time passes

- At this point I think we might see some of the build up to Godzilla. Ken Watanabe and team will investigate the sinkhole/powerplant disaster site in the interim (when radiation levels are safe) and find the bones underground, picked clean by the MUTOs who're all but extinct with no real food source. Something happens and Ken gets injured - I'll say they're attacked by MUTO's just for arguments sake - and he's rushed to hospital. I only say this because in the trailer he's talking to Elizabeth Olsen who plays a nurse in this movie and I can't think of another reason why the 2 would interact unless maybe they're old friends..that seems unlikely though. Anyway thats my reasoning. He's kinda doped up and while she's treating him he tells her the story of Godzilla "in 1954 we awakened something..." At this point in the film there is still room for doubt in her mind but she takes it on board.

- While this is going on Brody has returned to the site 15 years later after becoming a laughing stock and having his name dragged through the mud on a professional level for his reports on the powerplant incident (which he was witness to and is highly emtionally invested in cuz of the loss of his wife) . He's arrested. I think his interrogation will coincide with Serizawa et al being attacked in the sink hole and this will be our first action scene. I think centipede MUTO will break the surface, have a quick rampage followed by the emergance of something greater . Obscured at this point Godzilla will rise and kick the living bejesus out of Centifreak before returning to the ocean.

- MEANWHILE AT THE NEVADA MUTO FACILITY - word has broken of the MUTO outbreak in Japan and they are experiencing similar levels of seismic activity themselves. Action stations. They bring in the cavalry, along with a load of nuclear warheads, unaware of what Serizawa and his team discovered in the sinkhole. So, at this point I think the military is going back to the play book - in 1954 they must have got the impression that nucleur bombs could stop Godzilla, either that or they actually did stop him (albeit temporarily) so they're just going AMERICA F*CK YEAH! We're armed to the teeth and we await your arrival. BUt what emerges isnt Godzilla, something massive, but not Godzilla. An 8 legged MUTO and a winged MUTO. Winged MUTO takes off into the sky, we barely glimpse it, while 8 legs battles the military.

- Now its time for things to really kick off in the movie. I think Hawaii will be next and the Big G will arrive there, as will our winged buddy. Big reveals of both creatures.

- I'm lost now..making stuff up is fun.

Glad to see some of my own ideas are being recognized. Though, instead of a Godzilla hunter, as seen with the airport scene described in footage shown recently, the 8-legged MUTO is a rival whom must be taught a lesson in pure Godzilla smackdown! But then that begs the question:

Who could the second MUTO be? Is it just the flying type? Or is there an unknown variable somewhere around here, lurking in the dark, waiting to pounce?

Just so you all know, I made this before the description of the SXSW footage came out. Now it looks like the mutos, or "Hokmuto" as they are now called, really are the only monsters in the film :( I am dissapoint. That still doesn't make sense to me, how could that tiny little thing be such a threat to Godzilla that it forces him to leave the ocean?

EDIT: Also, all information we have so far seems to indicate that the "centipede monster," if it was ever meant to be in the film in the first place, was replaced by Hokmuto.

Well they cant spoil everything this early right? I still believe there might be a monster the size of Godzilla in this movie.
