Given what I saw, I think a nuke will close the portal.

In Pacific Rim Stories from year Zero ...... it seems that we nuke a San Francisco and perhaps one other city before deciding to start the Jaeger program. Also we are drying up funds for jaegers to build The Wall..... which I imagine is an idea to close the portal.
