OK, so I went and saw Prometheus twice on opening day here, the showings were 3 hours apart and I saw the 2D version first. The 3D I can’t really say I saw that well, maybe it’s just me, but I really can’t say that I’ll be paying to see a 3D movie again, because I can’t really see it to be honest. My mate that came with me said it was awesome in 3D, but the story confused the hell out of him. I’m trying to educate him though ;-) I hate to say it, but I could SMELL Damon Lindelof’s taint on the movie the whole way through, all the way down to the Star Trek-ish music. And the “Alien DNA” that Ridley alluded to was definitely there, there was one scene when the storm was blowing outside the Prometheus itself that instantly reminded me of the Nostromo on LV-426. A lot of the sets reminded me of Alien as well, from the interior of the Prometheus looking like the Nostromo in some places, to the interior of the pyramid where Milburn dies. Now, on to the story itself…….. At the start we see a big white Engineer drink the same sort of black fluid that appears later on in the movie. He starts to disintegrate into the water, seeding our planet with life. OK, cool. Scientists find cave paintings all over the world, some of them as old as 35,000 years old, depicting people worshipping these enormous beings, who are reaching into the sky towards a group of stars that lead us to, not their home planet, but their military outpost? Why would they want us to go there? OK, so let’s put together an expedition and go find out what’s there, shall we? Cut to a couple years later, you see a fast moving spot of light go from one side of the screen to another. Fast ship, that. Then we see David wandering around the ship, watching movies, eating, learning languages, dying his hair? WTF? That really didn’t make much sense at all to me. Next, destination arrival is imminent. Kewl, we’re FINALLY there :-D But hang on, it seems that no one knows anyone else on the ship unless they were already acquainted, and the meeting between Milburn and Fifield only serves as a set up for the trouble they get into together later. The rest we see very, very little of, and aren’t given a chance to understand why they are there, except maybe Ford, and I still have no idea what her actual job was on the mission, suffice to say that I suspect she knew Weyland was on board the whole time. So really, I didn’t care for any of the characters except for David and Shaw, because there wasn’t enough development of, well, any of them. At all. So, they land on the planet after getting a briefing from Weyland, Holloway and Shaw, being told that we are there for the purpose of discovering where we come from ultimately. And they find out thanks to a decapitated head that they do a DNA test on later, and we share the same DNA as these “Engineers” so they must be our Gods. ‘Nuff said. Ridley said he wanted to explore the question of “Where do we come from?” Well, he answered that about halfway through. Now, Ridley, why was the ship on LV-426 there and what happened for it to end up there? Hmmmm? No comment? OK. I’ll try to stay interested, but you’re starting to lose me here………. You’ve probably (hopefully) seen it by now, so I’ll cut to the chase here. The movie felt rushed in a few places, there were parts that could have benefitted from a bit more time investigating the surroundings and the ideas. As I already said, they answer one of the questions via DNA testing. But why were they so pissed off at us that they were coming to kill us all 2,000 years ago with their cargo of “thousands” of urns full of black goo? Why try and link this to the Alien universe if you aren’t going to answer a couple old questions your fans have while asking several more of them in the process? Two words. Damon. Fucking. Lindelof. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the movie, but I get really frustrated when a supposed story teller leaves things open to interpretation ALL THE TIME. It’s not story telling in that case, it’s just being a lazy hack that is riding the coat-tails of someone else’s universe. Dan O’Bannon would be ashamed of what Lindelof has done here I imagine. So I’ll leave this here, I think you get the idea of where I’m going with this, and I’ll probably come back and add to this review after I see it a third time. Visuals- Can’t really fault it here, everything LOOKED great, except for maybe the Deacon, I’m still not sold on that one, pity there wasn’t more development of some of the creatures 9/10 Music- Too Star Trek-ish, not very brooding or menacing, in fact I wasn’t scared for one single second of the movie. 3/10 Characters- The only ones I gave any sort of crap about were Shaw and David. Milburn and Fifield were just a pair of dimwits. Who the FUCK would try to pet an alien cobra? Moron. 2/10 Story- They Lindelof’d the crap out of it, felt way too rushed in a lot of places, I consider myself to be an intelligent person and I love a well-crafted story, and if there is a sequel that has a few answers about what happened not only in Prometheus but also the original Alien, so be it, but we shouldn’t have to wait another 30 years for that. 2/10, and I think I'm being generous there. A lot of the speculation many of our members engaged in here for the many months before the movie came out could have been a far better story in my opinion. I enjoyed the movie, but I really can’t see it growing on me over time. 3/5. Or 6/10, whichever scale you want to use ;-) Peace and MTFBWY :-D

Like most here, I enjoyed the overall film. That said, the one thing that stuck out in my mind that I would have appreciated some explanation on is how David knew which symbols to push to open each corridor. The second time I saw the film this was confusing. Next, I don't understand why Janek and his people needed to sacrifice themselves rather than set the ship on autopilot while they are able to get off and survive. Another thing that was not cool was how when the description of the Prometheus and its mission scrolled on the screen that the miles from Earth was some wacky equation that suggested as if people should have brought a calculator with them before entering the theatre.

I agree with everything you have pointed out, and also that it WAS a good movie but it had some major flaws; I feel it was deliberately held back to save something for the sequels and did not live up to it's full potential (great Director, actors, sets, budget ). I gave a generous 7/10. IMO, these were the biggest problems: 1-The movie felt rushed, it needed at least 30 more minutes to flesh itself out. I feel like I missed a huge chunk of the movie. 2-The Soundtrack reminded me so much of Star Trek I half expected Captain Kirk to break into his famous "These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise"... 3-I didn't feel an emotional connection with the characters.

Yep, all of the above Svanya, I did however really enjoy the nods to Dan O'Bannon's original ideas that didn't make it into the original Alien ;-) like the Egg silo.

Yes thats exactly what many people think and feel about the outcome - even me. Fans are not satisfied (though tinking and reading about it for days..), and the "mainstream" audience who expect a sci-fi plot like any other wont be satisfied AT ALL as they expect some monsters, explosions and a good brain-less action-drama, but for that expectation prometheus gives you to many open questions, which from the audience's point of view are interpreted as "plot holes" or better said "script mistakes, lazy writing" or however you want to call it. But we have luck that anyway it will be successfull ENOUGH so we can await the prequels. But actually i am not sure at all if i will follow this path anymore as it costs you time, and no satisfaction comes out of it... So maybe its better to leave this universe behind, watch sometimes alien or aliens again or some other great movies, and simply forget about this prometheus universe. I am little bit sad to say that as i waited so long for ridley to come back to science-fiction, and with LITTLE changes, the whole movie would provide a massive higher satisfaction. Yo, maybe on blueray extended version with cutted scenes blablah - nice. But follwing that "logic", i dont need to go to cinema, i can just wait lil bit and then even download the movie when its available, and show them the middlefinger for fooling the fans. Its frustrating that so many people from the studios seem to use their power to put their fingers into the art work and cut it here, cut it there, just to make it PG13 even if the film looses lot of its qualities, they dont care. And lindelof seems to make a joke of it to "riddle" around and laughing about all the monks that think and discuss for WEEKS what this or that "could" mean or does not mean. Waste of time.. Money rulez the world. But thats not MY world.

An essential ingredient of any story is caring about characters, here i couldn't give a monkeys about any of them. Fassbender's sterile stiff upper lip android was amusing and noomi rapace did a good job with the materiel she had to work with but i felt no warmth, or compassion, with any of the characters and that left me a little empty after i left the cinema and ultimately unfulfilled yet dazzled .

I totally thought that the Prometheus in the storm looked like the Nostromo, I even said that in my review also. Rushed is a good word man, I really didn't like the editing and with the open ended writing I was feeling like it could have been so much deeper with a few things expanded on and making some key scenes a bit more in depth. I agree too, the visuals are totally awesome I think they are the best part of the film.

I had been waiting patiently for your review @CYPHER and had looked out for it...as i felt bad since you where getting an awful lot of spoilers and info about the movie from us who saw it on June 1st...at least you know we weren't dicking around and gave honest somewhat disappointed accounts of what could have been (and seemed to lead up to then forget about) a great, scary, mind bending story..... i'm like you i enjoyed a lot of aspects of this film especially the first 70-80 minutes....but had even more WTF! moments...and bad narrative...i've never watched an episode of 'lost' so i'm not on the lindelof bashing wagon... it just spoke to me as bad writing and narrative and 'i'm trying to be clever'...and this from my neutral point of view....i love having questions in movies to think about...liken the larger ones of this film...creation god ETC...but I shouldn't be asked to fill in EVERY blank of EVERY plot line that spent 70-80mins of the film building up to...and then Abandoned (IMO) completely never returning to the story it intentionally distracted from with well placed storms etc...and give rise to all this speculation and discussion on this site...as were looking for some kind of supportive gel to bring the story together and justify at least to ourselves in this prometheus/Alien community of discussion that gives us something worthwhile....

"A lot of the speculation many of our members engaged in here for the many months before the movie came out could have been a far better story in my opinion." I would say so too. There are folks here that have quite a good imagination.

I liked this movie but in all honesty for the most part I thought I was watching Lost in Space.....yes the Matt leblanc movie, thats how poor some of the acting and some of the writing was.

What's more, the new(old) xenomorph reminded me of the alien characters in the film, "Enemy Mine" with Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett, Jr. Then again, it also brought to mind a pterodactyl without wings.

I'm glad you guys are on the same page as me with this. Yes it looked good, but don't promise me answers to things that you are never going to deliver on. And if I get more pleasure from the trailers to these things, hand it over and don't EVER look at doing anything like this again and don't Lindelof it. That guy is a hack, pure and simple. O'Bannon would be deeply ashamed of that guy's shithouse writing.

@Nickell, I'm sorry to have kept you waiting so long for the review :-P but yes I agree wholeheartedly, I don't like being spoon-fed answers but at the same time I'm not the one that started telling a story 30+ years ago with Alien, so I really don't feel like I should have to come up with the answers to the questions that movie raised. And I'm actually starting to wonder why it was even set in the Alien universe at all.........

I think david was dying his hair to emulate peter Otool in "lawrence of arabia".and yes it could use at least an extra half hour more time to flesh out sum chars, maybe explorer the world a lil..loved the move tho I just wish studios werent so terrified of putting out anything over two hours :/ and WHY was that guy trying to pet the evil wicked looking snake monster in space???WHAT???!!!

Last evening, I was thinking about the film, and it got me to thinking about how some of the earlier scenes should have been set-up. I'm giving my honest and humble opinion here, so don't blacklist me about how I felt the beginning scenes should have played out... Again, if this has been discussed on other threads, I would like to extend my most humble apologies.... Here goes: The set-up after the cave finding needed to have the scene with Holloway and Shaw meeting with Vickers, then follow up with the meeting in the gym. If it was me, I would want to know why I am being asked to go on secret mission, millions of miles from Earth, while suspended in cryosleep for four years. As many of you have said, the film felt rushed. And the set-up I write about is where the film begins to suffer from Lindelof's uninspired writing. And the last scene was just plain silly. To me, the only way that scene could have had any point is if the creature managed to make it on-board the ship the Shaw piloted.

So now that I've seen this for the 4th time I'm still not sure what I really think of it. I really wanted to punch Milburn when he went to pet the Hammerpede 4th time around, in fact I really felt like that whole scene was the dumbest thing I've ever seen anyone do. And I've lived in Western Sydney, people..................... Can't get much thicker than that some places out there......... Sooooooo stupid, and the guys a BIOLOGIST?! On an alien planet with no idea what the creatures can do? Moronicism, I says!!
