MemberOvomorphJun-06-2012 6:35 PMI have been a fan on this site since December last and a fan of Alien since 1979. I watched the movie last night and was disappointed. However my disappointment was not related to the fact this is not an Alien prequel. Thanks to all the leaks and discussions on this site I new what was coming. But my disappointment was centered around a missed opportunity. I believe the basis and theory behind the movie were excellent but it was poorly executed to the point at times of lacking any credibility. There is so much wrong with this movie it just beggars believe Scott was howling on about it for the past year. I can only surmise that the Lindelof script and the pressure for mainstream-ness box office success lead to the bastardisation of the final cut. If this is the case it means we will never see the likes of ALien or anything remotely like it again. It also does not bode well for P2 already muted. Because the franchise which was suppose to be resurrected here is now in doubt. It may well be 10 years before we see the sequel. ANYWAY my questions are this. WHY DO THE ENGINEERS WANT TO KILL US (I know this has been mentioned before but there is no link to the steeling of the ampule by David). Shaw and Janek seem to come to the conclusion before they meet the Engineer that this is dooms day. Are we saying that after 35,000 years it just so happens we arrive on their planet and they are ready to move.
THE OTHER QUESTIONS IS how does David know so much. It makes no sense his level of knowledge and also lack of protocol on the ship.

The movie should have had more talky moments with some deep discussion on the origin of man. It should have never had a living engineer or a synthetic with an agenda again! There should have been no auto operation chambers or idiotic scientist treating new alien lifeforms like a cute lost puppy. This film should have started on this planet and ended on LV426 and should have never ever shown the final ALIEN!

MemberOvomorphJun-06-2012 6:55 PMI agree Oly the movie lacked detail and direction. Virtually no exploration was done. €200 million was spent on 3D and large sets. Seems to be the driver behind movies today. The concept was so good and did not need to be rushed
now I believe it will go the way of the AVP franchise.

MemberOvomorphJun-06-2012 6:58 PMI agree with you man. Having studied 10 years plus in biology/genetics, there are so many holes in the theories behind this film it makes me laugh.
I think they just tried to be way too clever and explain far too much. Compare that to the original 2 Alien movies, which were extremely simple and focused on the here and now, with some human political manoeuvring to spice things up.
Here's a list of the controversial topics I could think of that they tried to cram into Prometheus:
Creationism/Evolution/Origin of life on Earth
Religion
Scientific (especially genetic) ethics
Mortality/immortality
Abortion
Ritual suicide
Familial strife
Android vs human psychology
Also I hated the ending, so blatantly setting it up for a sequel. Made me wish I'd bought some overpriced popcorn so I'd have had a box to be sick into.
Still, I enjoyed the film and with hindsight would still spend the money to see it.

I get the feeling that Ridley has had gaping holes in all the films he has made and through time he goes back and tinkers with them until they are better. like a DIYer in a shed. maybe he will wait till all the films are done and all the general gripes are in with the movie and then he'll work on his usual directors cut.
As for the engineers wanting to wipe us out for no reason, maybe they are just exactly like the human race. our history is littered with the military or government messing around with genes or just randomly wiping out an entire species just because we could
