Time Dilation in Prometheus rumour. . .

Now the best example of Time Dilation used in a sci-fi that I remember personally was in a Stargate SG1 episode where an alien race built a Time Dilation device to slow down time on a specific planet, in relation to space around the planet itself. So when 1year occured on planet, something like 100 years passed off-planet. So going by this example, how do you think it could be used in Prometheus. . .??

I wish I could even remotely answer this Xeno, but I cannot begin to. However, this is just one of the aspects of this film that I'll be rivetted to in absolute fascination. So, please fire away all of you and I'll just peruse, lol.

@Zetareticuli - Yeah it's been bugging me ever since I read somewhere that it maybe in this movie! Hmm, I'm kinda hoping it's not gotta do with why the SJ in the chair looks so fossilized (as it would seem too cliche and obvious). . .

Dont mention time dilation to Snorklebottom - he reckons it doesn't exist LOL

I will walk out and demand my money back if there is anything like this.

F--- it - lets go for it!

ive no truck with time dilation being in the movie, if its brings something new to the genre or if its necessary to explain the story. how it will be involed...ill leave that to ridley. seems to me you cant consider a story involving interstellar distances without utilising some form of time travel.

Well, for starters, if the Prometheus crew would travel fast enough, time dilation would be a good reason for everybody in the Alien saga not to know anything about what happened to them. @Ender: but I'm sure that at least he will enjoy your sarcasm haha

@ FILGFI you're right, there has to be time dilation if we're talking interstellar distanses but hopefully there will be no travelling BACKWARDS in time which would open the story up to basically anything. LOL Baldas!

@ Cypher - "I will walk out and demand my money back if there is anything like this" - would the cinema manager adopt a diplomatic stance concerning the laws of having time-dilation in films? Me thinks not. @Xeno - ta for the name remark!

here's my theory I'd be surprised if this is the exact detail, but this is how i think terraforming and time-dilation could be used...

worm holes=ok Point a to point b instantly. Going back in time or into the future=fail

MemberOvomorph02/9/2012
Well I'm assuming the Prometheus wouldn't travel the speed of light, or faster. . . I'd assuume mybe they go into some kinda cryo-sleep for a journey that'd take years perhaps?? Or as some people have mentioned, some kinda wormhole (even though it's been done LOADS before!). Or a gateway type thing like off Event Horizon (The best sci-fi/horror since Alien fyi). . .

time dilation: a space-voyage at near light speed is a one way trip into the future, thats real physics. effects with a round-trip would be interesting. planet of the apes used something a bit like it, i.e. the crew landed back on earth in the far future without realizing it was earth due to massive change

The 2001 Planet of the Apes had a weird ending! That still bugs me a bit. . . How did he go back in time near the "present", but he ended up about 50years ahead of his present. Yet somehow apes managed to talk and learn how to act and do human like stuff in the space of barely 50years! Lol. DAMN DIRTY APES!

Time dilation is as real as gravity, matter and all the rest. We all experience it but at the very low energy ranges we exist in the effects are so subtle we can't feel or see it. Two people traveling at different velocities will experience different rates of time, the faster you go the slower time goes. Gravity also affects time. Higher gravity = slower time. We've measured these things with atomic clocks at different heights and observing distance traveled by radioactive isotopes at different velocities with known decay halflives. It's to do with the fact that time isn't really a thing per se and more an amalgamation of the universal rate of entropy throughout the universe, the speed of light and the discrete nature of the quantum world (things happen in finite steps, with the smallest step being a function of the heisenbergs uncertainty principle). It's like movement (and gravity) stretches the steps, and in doing so slows down entropy. So if there's some kind of time dilation bubble in a scifi show or movie then all it's doing is describing a bubble within which entropy has somehow been slowed down. Nothing that we can do with current tech but that doesn't change the reality of time dilation. Traveling backwards in time though. That's juuuust a bit of a stretch when it comes to applying it to people and big ships, but theoretically feasible for single particles. Doable with a wormhole with one exit into empty space with nothing nearby and the other next to a blackhole. Sorry just had to throw that out there as it looked like some people didn't get time dilation.
