Indiana Jones 5 will release approximately 11 years after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This large time gap between the movies has led to speculation of whether Indy would die or pass on the hat. While Spielberg has repeatedly denied that Indy will pass on the hat, he confirmed the character's fate in a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter
Spielberg says he's "super excited" about that movie (Indiana Jones 5), dated for July 2019: "I think this one is straight down the pike for the fans." He won't reveal plot details, except this: "The one thing I will tell you is I'm not killing off Harrison [Ford] at the end of it."
Spielberg's remarks are certainly very intriguing. He seems to really want to reconnect with the fans of the franchise who may have felt disconnected from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Harrison Ford famously requested the character of Han Solo to be killed off in the Force Awakens, so the continued survival of Indiana Jones after this movie is intriguing.
This does leave open the possibility for additional installments featuring the legendary archaeologists. Alternatively, it could be Indy's final adventure with a well deserved retirement. It will be interesting to see how Indiana Jones has changed since the last installment.
Indiana Jones 5 will release July 19, 2019. The film will feature the return of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The movie will also be directed by Steven Spielberg. Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will also return to produce. The film does not currently have a title.
