Coming to CBS All Access next January will be the fifth TV serial spin-off from Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek series. The first TV serial to be set within the Star Trek universe in over a decade Star Trek Discovery will, hopefully, see a return to the interpersonal and intergalactic discoveries that made the Captain Kirk's original series and Captain Picard's Next Generation so universally appealing.
Unless the show is taking a new angle towards the design of the starships the USS Discovery: NCC 1031 looks to have elements of the Klingon Bird of Prey. This new starship certainly looks more aggressive in its design, but let's hope the show isn't as xenophobic as the ship's design would infer.
It will be interesting to see who showrunners Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman cast in the leading roles of the ship's command crew, although Fuller has inferred that the new series will follow after Star Trek Beyond's lead and include LGBTQ characters.
