Science Fiction movies have been around for decades now. This genre of films evolved quickly and managed to receive a lot of love from the viewers' thanks to the dream-like subjects they are touching. People had the opportunity to watch the SF pioneer movies from the 60s and the 70s, followed by movies with more developed concepts from the late 90s and early 2000s, to the present moment when anything’s possible in a movie.
Because of the progression, this genre experienced, both from a visual point of view but, also from a conceptual standpoint, we put together a list with our favorite Science Fiction Movies. Even if most of these movies are from recent years, we tried to pick movies that are touching a wider range of SF subjects.
The Matrix
The Matrix, the blockbuster sci-fi movie released in 1999, The Wachowskis biggest accomplishment so far as directors, and a movie to be remembered and mentioned for ages. This film takes the viewers by surprise from the first scenes. You have Keanu Reeves starring as Neo, the protagonist, playing a regular programmer with a normal life.
You also have Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus ready to change Neo’s perspective about reality, creating the legendary metaphor about the red pill and the blue pill. Always take the red pill. The iconic screenplay and the perfect acting transformed this movie into a sci-fi legend that will be relevant even decades into the future.
In Time
In Time is a movie released in 2011 by the director Andrew Niccol, and it’s touching a metaphoric subject about the people’s time and their life. Justin Timberlake is playing the main character, Will Salas, in his attempt to change an entire system after gaining his freedom.
As soon as Will is arriving in the big city, he goes gambling with popular people to build connections and meet his future enemies. Now, the place he’s gambling at, might not be exactly as something from our world, having Book of Ra games or anything similar but, they still have poker, and poker is the game they are playing.
Will meets both his biggest future enemy at the poker table but, also the person that’s going to help him prevail. The movie will take the viewers in an adventure, following Will’s steps as he’s succeeding in life while trying to change the world.
Inception
You might know Christopher Nolan as the father of the Batman series but, he is also the creator of a popular science fiction movie called Inception, released in 2010. Some might think that the movie was a hit because of its all-star cast consisted by Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Tom Hardy. The truth is that the movie was a success thanks to its fascinating theme.
Imagine what would happen if people could get into other people’s dreams to find out their secrets or change their thoughts. That’s the idea that the movie is touching, and it’s doing it in a memorable way.
Avengers: Infinity War
We’re all very familiar by now with the Avengers series, and the Marvel Movies in general, Infinity War being another hit from the series released in 2018. The success of this movie was guaranteed considering that this film is setting up the narrative for the last Avengers movies that’s going to end a lot of opened storylines.
The Avengers movies are always the best from the whole Marvel universe since they are bringing together a large number of Marvel characters as part of a way bigger narrative. The movie expected to get released this year is probably going to be the ultimate best from the whole series, and the whole Marvel universe.
Ex Machina
Ex Machina is Alex Garland’s best movie so far, and a huge overall success since it’s approaching concerning subjects to our times such as Artificial Intelligence and Robots in an entirely new way. A universe in which AIs look as real as humans might never be possible but, Ex Machina makes it possible, at least for one hour and fifty minutes.
Conclusion
Science Fiction movies have been a big and vibrant part of the cinematographic industry since they are allowing everybody to dream about a world that, at least for now, seems unreal. The five movies showcased above are our favorites thanks to the wide range of themes they are approaching.
