With Toho's Shin-Godzilla having passed and Legendary's upcoming Godzilla sequel, Godzilla: King of Monsters on the way, the interest for Godzilla continues to rise. Fans all over the world have shown their appreciation for the King of Monsters by creating various fan art, fiction and in some cases even their own fan created films. One such project is a non-profit fan film called Godzilla: Heritage and although the project seemed to remain dormant for a couple years, it has seemingly been revived with the film's official Facebook page having been updated with a bunch of new production stills.

Godzilla: Heritage is being helmed by Timothy Schiefer and Greg Graves, two New York based filmmakers with a passion for all things Godzilla. Their Kickstarter campaign raised almost $20,000.00!

Since Godzilla's first attack in 1954, mankind has been under constant threat from gigantic creatures known as "Superfauna" - animals mutated by the coming of the nuclear age and man's abuse of the atom's destructive power. Humanity was united against a common foe and for almost 60 years, worked collectively to study and combat the creatures as millions died, cities crumbled and the world's economy continued to collapse. Now, the world seems to finally be bringing the threat under control. Jack Martin is a correspondent for United World News and the grandson of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Steve Martin, who's riveting coverage of the 1954 raid on Tokyo made him a legend. With his grandfather's shadow always overhead, Jack has spent his career attempting to forge his own legacy, showing great promise as a journalist before spiraling into depression. In the process, he has severely damaged both his reputation and his marriage to family friend, Kaori Ogata. Before leaving the agency, Jack decides to travel to a small pacific island with his life-long friend Mitch Lawrence, who now runs UWN's old newspaper division. While the two wait to attend a ground-breaking ceremony for a new building, Godzilla suddenly reappears after nearly 30 years of absence...and he hasn't returned alone. With the King of the Monsters' threat looming, Jack must decide whether to flee or finally embrace his heritage and report the attack as it happens - risking not only his life, but the lives of his best friend and his wife.

Currently no teaser or trailer have been released, but you can visit the Godzilla: Heritage Facebook page for more information and additional photos from its production! Once a teaser is released, however we will be sure to feature it here as well.

A little background…

Godzilla: Heritage has been in the works for years, with the most recent Kickstarter campaign having failed back in 2015. The crew have, in fact, run three campaigns, only the second of which was successful. The only reason these images, and the short film they are a part of exist, is because of a single, generous backer who made money available to the crew after the campaign failed and all pledges, in accordance with Kickstarter policy, were never collected. That money has enabled the crew, including a full cast of actors and behind the scenes talent (including a few contestants from shows like Face Off and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge) to continue work.

The failure of the Kickstarter campaign meant that the project, originally a feature length film, had to be cut down to a 20 minute short “proof of concept” reel, and the suitmation effects scrapped for cheaper CGI.

But fear not. The crew is preparing the short, from which the above work in progress images originate, as a teaser to be included with their fourth and FINAL Kickstarter campaign, to be launched sometime this year. Once it goes live, I urge ALL OF YOU to PLEASE consider donating a little money, even if its only a few bucks! Your support will turn Godzilla Heritage from a 20 minute short into a feature length film, complete with tokusatsu (practical) effects!

And by the way, TWO teaser trailers do currently exist for the film! Watch them, along with the extended sneak peak, here!

Teaser 2 (sorry for the bad quality)

Sneak Preview

And here is a link to an article I wrote here on Scified back in the day to promote the film! I was very excited when the article resulted in a not insignificant spike in donations, and the creators personally thanked me (by name!) and the Scified community for spreading the word. I felt very honored, and I know that this time, we can work together to get the final campaign successfully funded!

I recall that post Danzilla! Thanks for the added insight, I was not aware of the unfortunate falling out on Kickstarter. Hopefully we can help them gain the traction and donations they need to make this film a reality!

I completely forgot about this fan-film. It is good to hear some news about it. I hope it turns out well.

Well said, Chris!

I truly believe our Scified community of Godzilla lovers can, and should, band together to spread the word about this movie.  We could be the fans that help make G-Fan history!

So all of you out there, please share these amazing photos and the plot synopsis on social media, on blogs, anywhere that you can!  And remember to add that this film is BY NO MEANS a done deal, or a sure thing.  They need ONE MORE Kickstarter campaign to turn this film into a feature length, tokusatsu-filled reality.  If the next campaign fails, they have already said that they will not try again, so the next try is the last one.

If we spread the word, we can make the next campaign successful, and who knows... maybe we will get TWO Godzilla films this year!  (Remember, the Anime feature film drops in 2017 as well!)

Is this going to be updated? It's been a whole year already.

Toho's lawyers caught wind of it. They will allow them to make the film, but under some very strict conditions. It can't be feature length which was their original intent, only 50 min. The budget can't exceed $50,000, which was the bare minimum they needed to make the film. It can't be released in any way other than a secure website that only backers would get, but they can't crowdfund either, which doesn't make sense. The creators of this project are trying to work how to possibly make it with the restrictions, possibly making the film without Godzilla at all and making new monsters. Here's the Facebook update for that:https://www.facebook.com/GodzillaHeritage/posts/1013792742084538

Am I the only one not sad about this thing's demise?

I admired the effort put into it. If there was another kickstarter campaign, I would've contributed. A fun little footnote in the series. Plus the footage they did put out before they agreed to take it down for Toho was actually pretty impressive all things considered.

What a shame!

The thing is I know some people who have worked with the guys behind this, including one who was courted to build miniatures for the project, but he turned them down. The production sounded far less glamorous and happy before Toho even stepped in--A lot of wasted funds. Butting heads. A lot of unhappy fans who were given so little in return for the large sums they donated. (Again, all of this was before Toho's ban hammer.)

On top of it not looking all that impressive to me, design wise, I think this would have been disastrous based on the behind-the-scenes issues.

I think that's something that'll happen with any project that isn't funded by a studio trying to look professional. I didn't donate to the initial campaign, but from what I understand, the funds were returned to the fans.

I liked the designs, it had a "this was definitely made by a fan/amatuer" thing going for it, which I admire.

I hope that at least somebody, like Legendary, takes the monster designs from this and get inspired by them.

^God, I hope not.

^I don't think the Anguirus designs are terrible. The Godzilla leaves some to be desired, but again, I think for fan project it's impressive.

I agree. Reminds me of the Heisei era, with how realistic the monsters looked. I think it was a good design choice. Hope we get to see full-scale photos of these.

I was trying to find a Godzilla Heratige Topic to comment on. Personally I love the designs but the movie based on the synopsis, seems to have had a similar concept to monarch from monsterverse. Another thing is that it doesn’t seem to retain the darker aspects of Godzilla, That I think makes the monster amazing.
