According to reports from Variety American actress Michelle Williams (Dawsons Creek, Brokeback Mountain, Shutter Island) has been casting the forthcoming movie from Sony Pictures Entertainment that will adapt the Marvel Comic's anti-hero Venom with Ruben Fleischer directing and Tom Hardy in the title role. Unnamed sources have reportedly told Variety that Williams will play a district attorney and possible Hardys love interest. Together with previous reports that the movie may adapt the 'sin-eater' story arc from the comic books and possibly feature Kletus Kassidy AKA Carnage as the antagonist, we here at Scified suspect that Williams will be portraying the character of Ann Weying.
For those not entirely familiar with the comic book source material of Venom the character of Ann Weying was a successful lawyer and Eddie Brock's (Venoms third host after Wade Wilson and Peter Parker) ex-wife. In the 'sin-eater' story arc of the comics Weying actually became, for a brief period, the fourth host to the Venom symbiote, after the sin-eater killer fatally wounded her. But while bonded with Venom Weying lashed out at the men that had wronged her in her past. Once healed and separated from the symbiote Weying was traumatized by actions as Venom and subsequently committed suicide.
Although a dark story to adapt, if Fleischer and Sony truly do want to adapt Venom for the big screen as an R-rated movie then the sin eater story arc would work as a nice reintroduction to the character after the poor mishandling of the character seen in Spider-Man 3. With Hardy already cast as Brock, let's hope that Sony listens to the fans and cast Jackie Earl Haley as Kletus Kassidy.
As well as being well known for having played Jen Lindley in Dawsons Creek and being the mother to the late, great Heath Ledgers daughter, Williams also starred in 1995's Species as the young iteration of Sil and earned an Oscar nomination for best-supporting actress for her role in Brokeback Mountain.
