It's official! Legendary Pictures have officially secured a licensing deal from The Pokémon Co. to produce a live action Pokémon movie based on the new character Detective Pikachu.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix were also very close to obtaining the license as well, but Legendary pushed hard following Pokémon GO's incredible popularity.

Legendary will begin production on their Pokémon movie in 2017 with Universal Pictures set to distribute the film worldwide except Japan, where Godzilla franchise owners Toho will handle distribution. Amongst a likely Warcraft 2, Godzilla 2, Pacific Rim 2, Kong: Skull Island, The Great Wall, Godzilla vs. Kong and now Pokemon, Legendary Pictures is pretty much set to rack up in Asian territories--Especially with a viable guarantee that all of their movies will play in China thanks to their new owner.
