For many fans the inclusion of director Justin Lin (best known for the action stunts in the Fast & Furious franchise) has been a point of contingency. It didn't help that the initial trailer was poorly received, seemingly playing to an audience other than Star Trek fans.
Although reservations are still high, the latest trailer, unveiled at a special fan event at Paramount, echoes the sense of wonder and fun that the 2009 film had while raising the stakes. Take a look at the much improved preview:
The latest trailer shows some impressive shots of the refit Enterprise, bearing a new impulse thruster after the shakedown from Into Darkness, and more of its pending destruction. Some character touches show retread on Kirk living up to his father while there's also some nice Spock/McCoy chemistry happening. The trailer's end also features what looks to be another Federation ship that bears a striking resemblance to the NX-01 Enterprise from the 2001 prequel series, Star Trek: Enterprise. Could it be? Or another ship of the same class?
While there's still some concerns in the air, it's nice to see a Star Trek movie given a trailer that feels a little more like Trek than a movie, "by the director from Fast & Furious".
Star Trek Beyond hits theaters July 22nd, 2016.
