Thanks to new information from Sci-Fi Japan, it has been confirmed that Godzilla Resurgence, like Godzilla '14, will be a complete reboot of the Godzilla mythology. In the upcoming Toho film this will be the first time Godzilla has ever appeared, thus abandoning all ties to the 1954 mythology. Sci-Fi Japan reports,
“While previous Godzilla movies have linked back to the 1954 original, the makers of GODZILLA RESURGENCE chose to present a story in which Godzilla appears in Japan for the first time. With a staff of 1000 people and shooting on an unprecedented scale for the franchise, Anno and Higuchi aim to bring the overwhelming reality of Godzilla to the big screen.”
It has always seemed likely that this movie would stand apart from previous entries and it's a good move. After the Heisei and Millennium series established multiple continuities that link back to the original film a clean break from the 1954 classic is a welcomed change of pace.
Sci-Fi Japan's exclusive also delivers new images from the film as well as high-res versions of previously released images. Additionally, they provide a thorough list of the cast & crew of Godzilla Resurgence. Make sure you check out their article for more.
What do you think of Godzilla Resurgence being a stand-alone film? Is abandoning callbacks to the 1954 classic a good move? Let us know in the comments below.
