Thanks to new information from Sci-Fi Japan, it has been confirmed that Godzilla Resurgence, like Godzilla '14, will be a complete reboot of the Godzilla mythology. In the upcoming Toho film this will be the first time Godzilla has ever appeared, thus abandoning all ties to the 1954 mythology. Sci-Fi Japan reports,

“While previous Godzilla movies have linked back to the 1954 original, the makers of GODZILLA RESURGENCE chose to present a story in which Godzilla appears in Japan for the first time. With a staff of 1000 people and shooting on an unprecedented scale for the franchise, Anno and Higuchi aim to bring the overwhelming reality of Godzilla to the big screen.”

It has always seemed likely that this movie would stand apart from previous entries and it's a good move. After the Heisei and Millennium series established multiple continuities that link back to the original film a clean break from the 1954 classic is a welcomed change of pace.

Sci-Fi Japan's exclusive also delivers new images from the film as well as high-res versions of previously released images. Additionally, they provide a thorough list of the cast & crew of Godzilla Resurgence. Make sure you check out their article for more.

What do you think of Godzilla Resurgence being a stand-alone film? Is abandoning callbacks to the 1954 classic a good move? Let us know in the comments below.

Interesting, that throws all the theories about him regenerating/being damaged as a result of the oxygen destroyer. I also think this gives it the chance for this movie to hammer down the level of tension and fear that hasn't been shown in a G film in a long time. I can't wait to see how this turns out.

Well they said that they'd return Godzilla to his roots. What better way than cutting any ties to the original 1954 movie?

I just they hope that Shin Gojira is a well-made, visually spectacular film with a meaningful narrative. If that means starting over, that's fine with me.

I like a complete new start. I was guessing by the design this would going to be some sort of retelling of the original in a more modern day setting.

Either way opening up the idea that Godzilla is this unstoppable force that's never been experienced before like original is something I find unfortunate that most films don't try to integrate, rather than just naming themselves sequels with only connections to the original.

I guess then .. we will have two variations with the same name and both are considered fresh starts.. aka reboots

... and the cool part is we can get the best of both worlds. so .. win win.

That Shin Gojira is a completely new start is more good news from this project. Think of the possibilities in terms of stories, kaiju and creativity. A complete break with the old timeline(s) should also mean that we're not going to see any of the old monsters. They, along with the events of 1954, simply do not exist.

This is an excellent idea, brilliant, actually. It's akin to hitting the reset button in 1984 with Gojira '84, a.k.a., the Return of Godzilla, except that it's even more radical. This is taking a big chance. Those monsters were full-fledged characters found in stories still beloved to the otaku faithful. Anno, Higuchi and company are going out on a limb with this move. It's bold and daring.

And, I love it.

It would appear to be in congruence with the extreme nature of the ShinGoji design itself. There's an immense amount of potential to expand 'the niche' that this genre operates in. The trailer would seem to point to a modern, stylish film that could appeal to non-fans as well. The narrative and story are key. It must speak to the audience in Japan as well as the rest of East Asia. If Shin Gojira can be cathartic as well as entertaining, meaningful and visually spectacular, the experience could be memorable and significant for the franchise.

It was also good to hear that the film was still being worked on up until lately. To me, this is something positive.

And lastly, I was pleased to hear that this entity, New World Cinemas was apparently not distributing Shin Gojira/Godzilla Resurgence in North America. It deserves better.
