Based on the Japanese graphic novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, 2014's Edge of Tomorrow may not have been one of the years blockbuster hits, but having earned $370 million worldwide against its $178 million budget and an overwhelming positive response from critics the film has become a sleeper, cult hit among science fiction fans. So warmly recieved was Edge of Tomorrow that its star action movie alum Tom Cruise expressed his desire to return with suggestions of a possible idea for a sequel.
Originally adapted for the screen by Christopher McQuarrie and the Butterworth Brothers (Jez and John-Henry), Edge of Tomorrow told of a world in conflict with an Alien race called the Mimic's (pictured below). Killed in action Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) wakes the preceeding morning with all of his memories intact; caught in a 'Groundhog Day-esque' time loop.
With director Doug Liman, stars Cruise and Emily Blunt eager to return, and with McQuarrie likely returning as a consultant and/or executive producer evidence that studio Warner Bros. have been slowly developing the sequel has been confirmed with reports that new screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have been brought on board to develop a screenplay likely based on Cruises teased proposal.
No release date has even been hinted at for this sequel suggesting that Liman, Cruise, McQuarrie and their team are taking their time to develop the movie, a welcome change from the current trend of building multiple movie spanning universes.
