He looks like a zombie! I wish the arms were a bit bigger. It feels like they can't get past his chest. But I bet they will. I can't tell if that's his real roar, or if they just put the Showa roar in because they are not ready to release a different version. Either way, if it sounds like Godzilla, then I don't care. I can't wait for more! I wonder if he'll have his Atomic Breath? What am I saying? Oh course he will! He's Godzilla! Now that I think of it, the red veins on him were glowing. Is the atomic energy in his body making his blood glow? Or, has Burning Godzilla been brought back? I doubt it's Burning Godzilla, but you never know.

I'm totally accepting of this incarnation of Godzilla. I definitely think the deformed look is what they're going for. The huge tail may look a bit much and arms too small, but I'm embracing it. It's great to see Toho releasing a new Godzilla movie!

Oh, and I've got lots of screenshots inbound shortly!

I have been waiting for a trailer for so long.  Why is it we see trailers in America for movies that will not be out in a year.  Now it is here.  All I can say is he looks great.  I am a little concerned about how he doesn't seem very mobile.  If there was another Kaiju, it would be the slowest fight.  Other then that, can not wait for it to come out.

Chris

AdminSpaceGodzillaApr-13-2016 4:39 PM

Welcome to Scified roarzola! Regarding the mobility, it actually makes sense from a physics standpoint that Godzilla moves very slowly. If another Kainu were to face Godzilla, at the size he is, they wouldn't be moving very fast. At least from our perspective.

I knew the trailer had to be coming one of these days! Godzilla looks awesome! My favorite Godzilla movie growing up was Godzilla 1985 and Shin-Goji looks like his spiritual successor. The music is great, sounds definitely like Shiro Sagisu's style so I would bet its from the movie itself.

This is gonna be a good one!

The trailer is very promising. The SFX and VFX are really about what I hoped for. This Godzilla is scary and ponderous and imposing. I know it's 'just a trailer,' but I liked the theme played throughout and I hope it's representative of the actual score. I got a 'sense' of the film from the trailer without the story being spoiled. I would like to hear the original 1954 roar. I loved the wide shots of Godzilla in the city. It provided a good sense of his size. If "Shin Gojira" well-written and acted, we could have something here.

If they were going for creepy, they succeeded.  Overall Godzilla looks bad A. Can't wait to hear the new Skreeonk. Those arms will give me nightmares though.

MemberTitanosaurusApr-13-2016 7:02 PM

@roarzola, I bet he moves slow because he's conserving energy. He's only walking. I think Godzilla will probably pick up speed when he goes on a rampage or starts a fight with the army or any enemy Kaiju we might see.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-13-2016 7:15 PM

According to August Ragone some of the effects are likely still unfinished. And, again according to him, the Godzilla we're seeing is fully CG.

I'm not entirely sure if "every" shot is CG, because that first look at his head roaring seemed pretty practical, but... there we are.

Loved the musical piece too. This was an incredibly creepy trailer. I love how ponderous and god-like they make Godzilla out to be. As if he doesn't care how slow he's going. He's Godzilla. He can end life however slowly he wants to.

GMAN2887 - Indeed! This iteration of Godzilla seems implacable - unstoppable. He has the look and feel of a true atomic horror crept back from the dark to exact the bitter reaping we earned when we sewed our nuclear past! I am very ecstatic! :)

@Gman, I know, I would bet half the shots were suitmation, or at least I thought they were. No doubt the effects for this G-film are miles better than previous Toho installments. I don't think many fans will have an issue with it.

The trailer also conveys a sense of an epic story and an immense struggle. The theme played throughout helped. It was very atmospheric. Godzilla conveyed a sense of mass and power. To this fan, this height, for him, works. I've read complaints elsewhere about him being too big. I honestly don't know what these people are talking about. I love that shot of him in the distance, still visible in a city with many tall buildings. Godzilla in this trailer is inexorable, powerful and fear-inducing. This is excellent work, Anno,  Higuchi and everyone else involved.

Thank you.

It also looks like Japan is taking the phrase,  "Japan verses Godzilla" seriously. For that's a rather muscular array of weaponry being brought to bear against Godzilla. Loved the wide, aerial shot of the naval ships. I wonder now,  after several viewings, if it means a confrontation at sea. And Godzilla does look like he's in pain. He's glowing and a visible carrier of immense energy. With this kind of power, he doesn't need to be athletic. Comments have been made-again,  elsewhere-about how stiff he looks. To me, he looks powerful. He's a force, unstoppable and impervious to what may be thrown at him. The arms and the tail just enhance the nightmarish nature of his appearance. He's surreal. You would see him (how you not see him?), but not really be able to comprehend or believe what you're seeing. This is part of what makes Godzilla so great: he's an actual creature,  but a symbol as well, although beyond complete comprehension. I think this Godzilla will have a presence that will be felt even when he's not onscreen.

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-14-2016 8:03 AM

I am so excited about this. I can't wait to see him in action. Even though his arms seem very short and he seems a bit slow but I think he's gonna be that godzilla that will bring toho those movie awards they so longed for .

Gojirapira

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-14-2016 8:16 AM

I also love the way he looks because he really looks like a mutated creature due to h bomb test . hes scary strong and above all huge so all of that makes up for his short arms. The way they showed tge might of Japan fight against the might of godzilla is awesome. There desperation to rid themselves of this menace makes thm seem very stressful but determined and focused on great battles . just can't wait.

Admittedly I haven't really been that hyped for this movie in the past few months. Seeing this trailer changed that. Love the new look for the most part.

Seems like he has a lot of open tissue around his spines. Maybe he burns away the charred flesh everytime he uses his atomic breath causing him severe pain? Just something I noticed watching this trailer

Chris

AdminSpaceGodzillaApr-14-2016 11:06 AM

Good observation Durp, that's totally possible. Like in Godzilla vs. Destroyah, could be a similar side effect of using his atomic breath.

Do we have confirmation yet that this is in fact the Goji from 1954 post-Oxygen Destroyer?

Panthalassan

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-14-2016 11:38 AM

@Gman and @Chris Picard, I think he's a mix of CGI and that big puppet thing we saw pictures of. I think his tail is CGI and then maybe his spines too, so they can clatter around, while the rest of him is the puppet.

@Jamaal, I agree that his size and the sense of mass is perfect. He looks so huge and unstoppable. So exciting!

Chris

AdminSpaceGodzillaApr-14-2016 12:19 PM

@Panthalassan, That could be the case as well. The tail definitely looks CGI, but the spines almost looked practical. Hard to say - which is a good thing, you want the CG and practical effects to blend. All in all, it's looking great!

Is it just me, or does it seem as though Godzilla has a bad leg? I keep watching the trailer, and I get the impression that he may have a slower gait due to muscular damage in one of his legs. Hmm...food for thought! :)

Geez the special effects look incredible.

That tailswipe over the buildings and the fighting with the military look so real. I'm glad they're going with the practical/CGI blend. It just looks so impressive.

Now we just need an epic roar to represent the new look and a quick bit of the classic Goji theme. :3

Jamaal

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-14-2016 6:50 PM

This trailer is a great source of reassurance to me. It carries a modern, epic feel to it. It's good to see actual, existent military hardware being deployed. The musical cue makes one feel that events are spiraling out of control. Even without dialouge, the urgency and desperation of the government and the military is palpable. They're helpless. It's so plain. In contrast to this, Godzilla is unstoppable, the anticipation of what he may do is chilling. I look forward to seeing and hearing why he had returned or appeared. Could it be a crisis in the region that causes it? I love the apparent scale and the wide, panoramic shots. This helps to give the film a semi-do***entary, 'this is really happening feel.' Some of the coloring reminded me of "Gamera 2: Advent of Legion."

I'm looking forward to "Shin Gojira" more than ever, God willing.

Nothing really to complain about except that the suit/animatronic scenes look way better than the cg scenes so far.

After about 12 viewings or so, I would say that the long tail goes with the great, overwhelming height of Godzilla. Specifically, that shot of him, about, oh, I don't know, a quarter of a mile away with people running in the foreground. In that shot, the length of the tail goes with, and seems proportionate to his height.

Anyway, I'm loving this design. I'm looking forward to seeing the Toho Blu-ray/Region 3 DVD, hopefully this fall, God willing. At least we have a Blu-ray region in common with Japan. I was hoping that Tokyo Shock would be distributing the Blu-ray and DVD here. I was also hoping for a limited theatrical run,  a la "Attack on Titan." But recent news would seem to indicate otherwise.

Huge-Ben

MemberBaragonApr-15-2016 3:04 PM

@jamaal,

The music alone represented a dark atmosphere. Something not done since the late great Akira Ifukube. Godzilla alone represents the horror of the radiation scarring he has received from either the atomic bomb or the Fukushima disaster.

I love the fact the trailer didn't give off anything around the plot. I think this helps keep people in the edge.

The hybrid special effects technique, is absolutely beautiful. I'm really excited to see this movie.

Yes! The trailer is gorgeous, and the joy it provides is only dampened by the news about Shin Gojira's North American distribution. Or lack thereof, theatrically.

But, that aside, the cinematography is beautiful. Godzilla looks and moves like the nightmare that he is. Based on the trailer, Shin Gojira looks like it could be that modern, epic Godzilla film that is naturally evocative of the 1954 original. The combination of digital and practical effects should actually help to enhance the vision of a giant monster that has been affected by being exposed to fifteen megatons of nuclear power. The complaints about a perceived lack of mobility and his appearance are missing the point: a creature mutated and irradiated by the Castle Bravo test in the Pacific Ocean should move and look like Shin-Goji. The music piece played throughout the trailer was riveting, and it matched the scenes perfectly: the shots of Godzilla, the desperation-driven military and government personnel, the lighting (sunset and the onset of night) and the overall 'feel' of what was presented.

Huge-Ben said:

Agreed. If the trailer is indicative of the overall SFX/VFX of Shin Gojira, it would seem that the 'hybrid' technique mentioned by Shinji Higuchi has been vindicated. This trailer is beautiful. I intend to get the Toho Blu-ray and a Region 3 DVD as soon as they are available, God willing.

Shin-Goji looks and moves like he's damaged. Whatever he was before, he no longer is. With the immense power and ability to cause immense destruction, has also come a great amount of damage and harm. It will be interesting to wonder (and see) to what extent he has acquired a sentience that makes more than an instinctual animal. Shin-Goji is truly a monster. We can be naturally fearful of him-indeed, we can dread him-but, because of what he's been subjected and exposed to, we can have empathy for him as well. The potential for emotional investment and involvement on behalf of the viewer (I hope we get be among them, reasonably soon) is immense.

This reviews makes some comparisons between Shin Gojira and Legendary Godzilla 2014:

https://killscreen.com/articles/the-king-of-the-monsters-is-***ing-back/

He says:

"This Godzilla is not a hokey, well-intentioned environmental parable, nor a goofball franchise character: it’s a plague, twisted and malformed by hate, roiling with sickness and heralding death. It’s nuclear meltdowns and dying planets and fascist politicians and crumbling societies made necrotic, malevolent flesh."

I think he 'gets' it.

Chris

AdminSpaceGodzillaApr-15-2016 6:44 PM

Wow haha that is quite the comparison, but I believe it. I'm prepping a post that explains why this Godzilla looks the way he does. I'm sure everyone will interpret the design differently, but the themes of plague, sickness, destruction and deterioration / regeneration are definitely underlying elements.

Jamaal

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-15-2016 9:45 PM

I think that Shin Gojira will to have been filmed in such a way so as to contrast it with the 2014 film by Legendary. It cannot compete, budget-wise, and therefore resource-wise, with a big studio production. But, it can bring to the table elements that are unique to tokusatsu-made films, as well as the culture from which it arises. Shin Gojira, I believe, will be dark and ominous in a way that Godzilla 2014 was not. I believe that Godzilla will be featured more prominently. The look of the film can be 'real,' as in semi-do***entary-like, but slightly other-worldly at the same time. I think Toho wants their Godzilla films to appeal to a wide audience. So it's going to have to look real enough to be credible, even when placing the audience in the midst of events that are incredible. I also believe that the film's narrative and story, and how they are expressed, are crucial. A meaningful, relevant story will keep the audience engaged. The characters must be likable and human, hopefully with quirks and some personality. They don't have to be perfect. In fact, it would be better that they be flawed enough to be real. If Shin Gojira carries a message, it shouldn't be rammed down the  viewer's throat. But, it should offer hope.

Jamaal

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-16-2016 11:33 AM

Here's a couple of videos on You Tube about the trailer. They both seem to feature coverage and promotion of Shin Gojira, with scenes from the trailer along with behind-the-scenes (or 'B-roll') footage showing some of the stars of the film, as well as Supervising Director/Screenwriter Hideaki Anno talking with them. One shot looks like it could be from the film itself. There's also footage of people running (for their lives?) down a street. If someone can translate some of what is being said by the people hosting this program, it would be appreciated. In reference to the trailer footage, a graphic with the letters "CG" appears. The more I look at this, hopefully the first of several 'looks' at Shin Gojira, the more I love it.

by estimation only... I put his tail at more than 400 feet long... given that he is 388 feet tall and his tail clears his head by quite a bit. his breath is not the only weapon. he a walking wrecking machine.

Jamaal

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-16-2016 6:40 PM

Yes; imagine what he can do with that tail! I love it. To me it's one of those flourishes you find in tokusatsu films and characters. And Godzilla is a character. This tail, the Shin-Goji Tail, could become a trademark or calling card of his. Anyway, I love it more each time I watch the trailer (although it was kind of jarring at first, but that's a good thing). I expect and want the unusual and the striking when watching these kinds of films. If I wanted 'total realism' (a value-bereft term), I'd watch a show on the National Geographic Channel. No. I want the fantastic and unusual.

But, opinions and tastes differ, so...

But today, I watched the trailer continuously during the treadmill portion of my workout, which is about 40 minutes. And the music theme! It's beautiful, majestic and moving! I can't stop thinking about it. I think, if the trailer is a portal into how Shin Gojira actually is, that this is the grand, opera-like Godzilla that can appeal to fans and general movie goers alike. I've seen videos of shows in Japan featuring the trailer and showcasing the film. Oh, to be in Japan right now (during the promotion blitz) and on through the middle of August! I'm curious as to what is being said about the trailer in Japan. There were several comments about the videos on YouTube, but they were in Japanese. Has anyone heard anything?

Below is an email I sent to Toho Studios regarding the website for Shin Gojira and the issue of a theatrical release:

"Dear Sirs/Madams:

Will there be an English Language version of your website for Shin Gojira (a.k.a., Godzilla Resurgence)?

English speaking fans of Godzilla would appreciate being able to get the latest news and updates of this most anticipated film.

I've been a fan since the 1960's, growing up in Southern California. As I recall, your site for Godzilla 2000 Millennium had an English version.
I want to thank you for the trailer released last week. It was beautiful. I hope that we will be able to see Shin Gojira here in North America sometime this year. A limited theatrical run here would provide audiences with the precious opportunity to see a unique and wonderfully expressive art form and genre, as exemplified in the character that started it all, Godzilla. I know that nothing quite compares with seeing a film like this on the big screen, as it should be seen. I was fortunate to be able to see several Godzilla films at screenings sponsored by American Cinemateque at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood in the early 2000's. Fans here would love to see  Shin Gojira the way those fortunate enough see it in Japan will. I am also sure that general movie goers would be enthralled by the film made by Anno-san and Higuchi-san.

I wish all of you the best during the upcoming theatrical run, and I hope that Shin Gojira is a huge hit that is embraced and loved by the movie-going public in Japan.

Thank you for receiving my email and considering this request.

Sincerely,

Jamaal Abdul-Rahim

I don't know if anyone has seen this, but here's a rather detailed article about the ShinGoji Design on Wikizilla:

http://godzilla.wikia.com/wiki/ShinGoji

The discussion of this design has enhanced my appreciation of it and reinforced my belief that a lot of thought has gone into the film, its story and concepts. In Shin Goijra, Godzilla is truly a monster. People may vary in their appreciation of this design, but I love it and see in it a victim, transformed by misuse of the atom. I feel toward it the way I do toward the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Godzilla is scarred and disfigured the way they were. The ShinGoji is one of the key elements that would seem to make Shin Gojira very Japanese. Hideaki Anno is quoted as having said that this is a design that only the Japanese could make. This, is what Toho can give us, on fraction of the budget of the Legendary picture. Some things cannot be replicated, financial resources notwithstanding. An American made Godzilla could never look like this because it has to be able to be out on lunch pails and toys, and suitable to be a ride at Universal Studios. With a certain amount of homogenization comes a loss of symbolism and concept defining imagery. This is part of the problem, I suspect, that some fans are having with the ShinGoji: he's not pretty. And that's fair. It's a matter of choice. For me, it's a direct link to not only the 1954 Film, but also a placeholder for, and symbol of, the genre, the Series and the tokusatsu tradition in general. To embody the meaning of shin in Shin Gojira, Godzilla has to look this way. The hope is that this film will take us to the heart of the whole matter in a way that is transformative, and, perhaps, cathartic as well.

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-21-2016 10:21 PM

I find those comments a little self-serving, and in MANY ways hypocritical.  Does he really buy the "has to be on lunchboxes" bit?  Come on.  Should we go back to pretty much EVERY Godzilla design after Gojira and before this one?  Come on now.  I think these guys and the marketing is SO focused on 2014, I'm actually starting to worry about Shin Gojira's true focus.  It's starting to feel like a bad mixture of arrogance and jealousy at the same time.  I played sports at a high level.  The toughest thing to learn is to NOT focus on your opponent, so much that you forget what makes YOU good.  F**k Legendary.  Focus on YOUR vision and how it will touch others.  Not how it compares to other incarnations.

/off the soapbox

Jamaal

MemberMothra LarvaeApr-21-2016 11:37 PM

The moral issues of the Bomb were muted in the 2014 film. The testing of nuclear weapons in Japan's backyard were portrayed as attempts to kill Godzilla, instead of the continued development of weapons of mass destruction after having incinerated unarmed, unsuspecting civilians. Although briefly referred to in the Legendary film, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and thus the moral issues of their use, was swept aside, BECAUSE AMERICANS DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT. The ShinGoji is a living reminder of what was done on August 6 and August 9, 1945. On the other hand, with the 2014 film, these events are conveniently overlooked and responsibility for ghastly acts is not discussed, because Godzilla is a deface ally of the American military. Look at how he allows warships to practically escort from Hawaii to the West Coast. The ShinGoji is a scarred and mutilated reminder of the evil that has been done by people who made civilians objects of an experiment. This hypocrisy and self-serving attitude is actually found with those who attempt to separate Godzilla from the Bomb so that a movie franchise can flourish.

Fans don't understand tokusatsu is. Not only a tradition but an art form its not a relic people.

Godzilla is the embodiment of the atomic bomb. Few people realize that this is what Ishiro Honda originally envisioned for Godzilla. An actual victim. In fact, he was originally to have a mushroom cloud face. Hence the tumors on Shin Godzilla.

Without the warning of nuclear power, people will forget what history has taught them.

This is true, Huge-Ben.

The meaningfulness in the symbol of a monster is part of what the visuals help to provide. Otherwise, Godzilla is just another 'monster on the loose.' The issue of The Bomb obviously cannot-and should not-be separated from Godzilla. Which one reason why he'll always be Japanese. This doesn't mean that other people can't make good Godzilla films, like Legendary did. But in order to 'experience' Godzilla fully-in terms of its original message, the message delivered by Ishiro Honda, the film, the story must be, to some degree, at least, cathartic. And there's no catharsis without the acceptance and acknowledgment of responsibility and culpability. The two Godzilla films made on this side of the Pacific-symbolically significant actually-both chose to dilute the issue of the Bomb. The Roland Emmerich film laid the blame for Godzilla's transformation and mutation at the door of the French. The Legendary film transformed the nuclear testing in the Pacific into attempts to kill Godzilla. I get it: you're not going to have a viable franchise with a 'downer' film that discusses issues attendant to the moral issues connected to the development and use of nuclear weapons. People want to feel good when they leave the theater, and they may want to feel that in Godzilla, they have a new friend, an ally who can save them when the bill becomes due for the excesses we've committed.

This is one of the reasons I've wanted to see another Japanese Godzilla. It's never been just the updating of the tradition effects by blending them with digital technology. No. It's always been a longing to see those original themes revisited in a modern, up to date, relevant film made by the only people who could make it.

Has the music  from the  trailer been confirmed as being from the actual  score? Also, is there any indication as to what fan sites in Japan  are saying?

The trailer for Shin Gojira holds out the promise of a masterful and distinctly Japanese blending of practical and digital effects. This is the 'hybrid' SFX/VFX promised by Co-Director and Director of Special Effects, Shinji Higuchi.  Aurally, the trailer moves and builds towards a dramatic and seemingly inevitable climax. The human characters being shown to be speaking, while actually not being heard, underscores their helplessness in the face of events they could not anticipate, let alone, control. Yet, along with this, one gets the direct impression that they are acting resolutely and courageously in spite of the inexorable force that threatens the nation. Without any dialogue, the scenes are almost dream-like, surreal in their beauty. This is what one hopes to be immersed in when experiencing the best of tokusatsu.
