For 15 years the X-men movies, which paved the for the MCU and DC's forthoming cinematic universe, have been credited as being the forefather of todays influx of superhero movies. With a genre sourced from a highly visual medium followed almost religiously by waves of dedicated fans of all ages and with characters older than most Hollywood studios it comes as no surprise that sometimes directors upset the fanbase from time to time.
2013's Man of Steel upset fans when our hero murdered General Zod by snapping is neck. Ben Afflecks lacklustre performance as Matt Murdock in 2003's Daredevil. The mute, zombified Deadpool seen at the end of 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The Ghost Rider movies. 2006's Superman Returns (pictured above). The rubber faced Hulk in Ang Lee's 2003 movie of the same name. Jared Leto's Marilyn Manson-esque Joker in next years Suicide Squad... The list goes on and on.
Recently pictures of the villain from next years latest X-Men movie, X-Men: Apocalypse were released, featured heavily in the latest issue of Empire magazine. Almost instantly fans rebuked the uber-mutants new look, likening Oscar Issac's makeup as reminiscent of Ivan Ooze, the villain from the 1995 Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers movie. Lets run a comparison between the three...
X-Men Apocalypse director Bryan Singer, whom it must be remembered was responsible for the lacklustre Superman Returns (mentioned above), has responded to the criticisms from fans, “He'll be very similar to images in the comic. There's obviously something very futuristic and yet ancient to the design of both his costume and his physicality.”
Well, as can be seen in the comparison picture we created especially for this article, as Singer states Oscar Isaac's Apocalypse does share some traits from the comic book original, such as the detailing on the characters head and the characters collar, but the color scheme is all wrong. Apocalypse on film should be grey skinned, and attired in blue and chrome; the overwhelming use of the purple hue in the picture taken from set of the forthcoming movie does, unfortunately, look more like Ivan Ooze than it does Apocalypse.
With filming still underway, we suggest that a redesign for Apocalypse should be fast tracked and Oscar Issac's scenes reshot, or at the very least that the characters color grading be toned down in post production - if Apocalypse is shown on the big screen being that purple when the movie is released next year, it could be the final nail in the coffin for X-Men movie franchise.
