To the dismay of many sci-fi enthusiasts, HBO have opted to cancel Westworld and not renew the series for a fifth season! The decision comes as a result of viewership for Season 4 having been reduced by 3 times its original viewership from Season 1 in 2016. The first season of Westworld came roaring out the gate with 12 million viewers and a multitude of praise and interest. Fast forward, Season 4 struggled to gain 4 million viewers by comparison - an audience that sadly does not justify the immense budget and production value the show demanded.
To further put things into perspective, HBO forked out about $125 million for the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon - which garnered close to 29 million viewers per episode. Season 4 of Westworld cost HBO at least $160 million for a measly 4 million viewers, according to THR.
The latest season also seemed to lose a lot of its appeal with followers of the show as well, having taken the plot in dramatically new directions.
Originally Westworld was going to span 6 seasons, but due to falling ratings, less than stellar reviews and a dismissing viewership, it appears the dystopian futuristic sci-fi series may be shelved indefinitely.
Are you disappointed by HBO's decision? Or did Westworld lose its appeal for you with the last 2 seasons? Sound off in the comments and let us know!
