Warner Brothers are reportedly looking to reboot the revolutionary cinematic phenomenon, The Matrix and are apparently currently in talks with Zack Penn to write the film's script.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the studio is in the early stages of rebooting the iconic sci-fi franchise, aiming to explore other avenues of the Matrix universe, rather than remaking the original trilogy - much like how Disney have created anthology films set in the same Star Wars universe, but not directly linked to the episodic installments.
The Wachowski siblings are not involved at this point and sources claim the likelihood of them returning to direct the reboot is unlikely - which is extremely unfortunate considering Keanu Reeves stated he would be interested in returning to play Neo (The One) in a future Matrix film - on the one condition that the Wachowskis were involved. So, no Wachowskis, no Reeves.
Sources close to the studio also claim Michael B. Jordan is being eyed for a lead role.
The Matrix is such an iconic and well-respected franchise, its characters and its mythology can not be easily replicated. In some cases, rebooting a popular property like this would be welcomed with modern day effects and a fresh cast, but it seems like rebooting The Matrix would be a bad move, at least with respect to its fan base. Without the Wachowski's involvement and without Keanu Reeves, it's hard to envision a successful reboot.
What do you think of Warner Brothers' plans to reboot The Matrix? Are you all for it? Do you have concerns? Sound off in the comments and let us know!
