Todd McFarlane, creator of the infamous anti-hero Spawn for Image Comics was recently quoted expressing frustration with the ongoing production of the latest Spawn movie reboot which currently has Jamie Foxx signed on to play the lead role as Spawn and Jeremy Renner cast as Twitch Williams and McFarlane himself directing.
During NYCC McFarlane expressed frustration that Hollywood doesn’t really understand what he's trying to do. The constant need for PG-13 rated comic book movies does not bode well for Todd's vision for Spawn - which really should be created as an R-rated horror flick, not an upbeat superhero film if it is to stay true to the original Spawn comics.
I can tell by the notes they gave they just don’t understand it.
Although Venom's box office performance shocked critics and continues to prove that a darker comic book film adaptation can generate interest, revenue and do the title character respectable justice on a PG-13 rating, Spawn fits into an even darker category than Venom.
Whether or not Todd will get his wish and create a gritty, horrific, R-rated Spawn movie, has yet to be seen.
This Spawn reboot will be Todd's directorial debut, with filming expected to to begin within the next few months. Check back for more updates!
