1991's mega sequel Terminator 2:Judgment Day, in which star Arnold Schwarzenegger protected Edward Furlong's John Connor from Robert Patrick's slippery T-1000, is to be converted into 3D by DMG, Yinji and creator James Cameron before being distributed in cinemas in China for the first time ever by Studio Canal and the China Film Group.
China, now recognized as the worlds second largest cinema audience after America, never saw Terminator 2 released back in the summer of 1991 due to the countries strict media censorship during that period which saw very few non-Chinese productions aired for Chinisee audiences.
T2 3D (the movie, not the recently closed down Universal Studios attraction) will premiere in China next year before being released worldwide, confirms director Cameron...
“Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Terminator 2 and that seemed like the perfect time to bring it back but this time in an all-new 3D version."
Dan Mintz (pictured above with Cameron and Yinji Entertainment chairwoman Wu Bing), CEO of DMG Entertainment...
"For a whole new generation of fans, it is truly a chance to see the movie that really set the bar for action and effects that all the movies today are trying to top, in a completely new way — in the theater and in 3D. We are committed to making the conversion the highest quality in order to live up to the expectations of the film’s many fans around the world.”
President of international distribution and marketing at Studiocanalsaid Rodolphe Buet, added...
"We are very excited to be teaming up with DMG and James Cameron to breathe new life into T2 and bring it in 3D to cinema-goers in China. This is consistent with our long-standing policy of carefully curating the over 5,000 titles of our masterpiece-filled catalog and releasing them to new audiences in partnership with the greatest talents in the industry.”
Could this be, after the lukewarm performance and critical panning of Terminator Genisys, an attempt by Cameron to ensure the viability of the franchise he created? Is Cameron planning to complete the Terminator franchise as per the fans hopes? Its a strong possibility considering the Oscar winning director recently relinquished directorial duties on the much anticipated big screen adaptation of Battle Angel: Alita to Robert Rodriguez. Cameron and his ex-wife and producer of The Terminator and Terminator 2, Gale Anne "Gunner" Hurd also entertained the notion of returning to francise that made him a household name at a recent anniversary screening of the franchise first instalment.
