Sony's Venom movie and sequels might be rated PG-13, not R.

Sony's Venom movie might be aiming to secure a PG-13 rating, not the initial R rating hyped by film crew and wished on by fans alike. Not that a rating is ever indicative of a better film, but given Venom's rather dark tone and history, it seemed rather fitting that the Symbiote anti-hero would be portrayed accurately and seriously on the big screen. With such claims of Venom "ripping faces off", many would assume Sony were gearing up for an R rated entry for the first of at least 3 planned Venom movies. However, as Variety explains in a recent exclusive report, Sony are seeking a lighter rating to secure potential cross-over opportunities with Marvel's own MCU:

It’s unlikely that “Venom” will be the first R-rated Sony Marvel movie. Trailers for the film, which recently underwent reshoots in Los Angeles after shooting in Georgia, emphasized the horror movie elements, showing the title character as he’s about to bite a person’s head off. But some members of Sony’s brain trust believe that the film should push the very limits of PG-13 without crossing over into a higher rating. The feeling is that will give the studio greater leeway for future installments that will feature Spider-Man, something “Venom” does not do. Any Spider-Man movie will carry a PG-13 rating because the wall-crawler is more family friendly, and if “Venom” is too dark and gory, it might preclude other film match-ups, not just with Peter Parker’s alter-ego, but also with other members of the extended Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Although no official rating has been classified, we continue to hope Venom brings the heat and the dark tone we've been sold in the latest trailers. Especially, considering Venom's sequel is planning to introduce Carnage - there's no way Carnage could be accurately portrayed with the limits of a PG-13 rating.
