Shia Labeouf's role as "Mutt" Williams was one of the more controversial aspects of 2008's Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Labeouf's character was revealed as Indy's son, Henry Jones III, with the film setting up the possibility that he could one day follow in his father's footsteps as a globe trotting adventurer. However, David Koepp, the scriptwriter for the upcoming fifth film revealed that Labeouf would not return during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say, and the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film.”"
Koepp's comments confirm that the character will not appear on screen in the upcoming sequel. However, this answer leaves it open that he may still be referenced, with some explanation given for his absence perhaps. Koepp went on to explain the current state of the script of the upcoming film:
"We’re plugging away at it. In terms of when we would start, I think that’s up to Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Ford,” he continues, playfully teasing that the plot will involve “some precious artifact that they’re all looking for” throughout the film. “I know we’ve got a script we’re mostly happy with. Work will be endless, of course, and ongoing, and Steven just finished shooting The Post…. If the stars align, hopefully it’ll be his next film.”"
It appears that the script is in a very good place right now, the writers having figured out the main MacGuffin for the story to revolve around. These script rewrites may prove to be a very positive thing as well, as the writers fine tune the script to their satisfaction.
Indiana Jones 5 will release July 10,202. The film will feature the return of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The movie will also be directed by Steven Spielberg. George Lucas will be the Executive Producer. Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall are also credited as producers. The film is currently untitled.
