We are halfway through the twelfth season of the iconic British science fiction TV show Red Dwarf, which much likes its previous series, which aired last year on British terrestrial TV channel Dave, has again proved to be a return to form for fans of the long-running show that have followed the misadventures of Lister, Rimmer, the Cat, and Kryten since the shows premiere back in 1988. There are not many comedy shows that after nearly thirty years are still making audiences laugh, especially one dependent on such a small cast.
So far the three episodes that have aired via UKTV's on-demand service UKTV Play have all returned back to the simple formula that made the show such a success in its earlier series, in which the crew of the Red Dwarf play off each other as they encounter that weeks 'event'. Thus far the Red Dwarf crew have encountered the worlds worst dictators, a crew of wayward mechanoids, and a ship where criticism has been made illegal, the latter of which includes a guest appearance from British comedian Johnny Vegas (pictured below).
The dynamics that play out between Rimmer's narcissism, Lister's laziness, the Cats vanity and Kryten's selflessness has always been the shows strength, which is why the resurrection of the Red Dwarfs crew in seasons VII and VIII continues to be debated by fans to this day. Let's hope stars Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn, and Danny John-Jules can once again repeat this success and give us something special next year to mark the shows 30th anniversary.
