Independence Day: Resurgence (aka Independence Day 2) had a lot of promise in concept, but sadly having to overcome an extremely late release date (20 years after the original film) without its driving star seemed to big a task, even for the action movie blockbuster veteran Roland Emmerich. During a recent interview with Yahoo, Emmerich admits he feels he shouldn't have made Independence Day: Resurgence after Will Smith had bowed out in favor of filming Suicide Squad:
I just wanted to make a movie exactly like the first, but then in the middle of production Will opted out because he wanted to do Suicide Squad. I should have stopped making the movie because we had a much better script, then I had to really fast, cobble another script together.
It's unfortunate we'll never get to see Roland's original vision for the Independence Day sequel and given the poor response to Resurgence, it's unlikely the property will ever be revived for another film - especially with Disney now in control of the Fox title.
Roland Emmerich's latest film, Midway based in the battle of Pearl Harbor hits theaters November 8th.
