If you merely blinked you could've easily missed one of the many monstrous updates made to Legendary's Kaiju cinematic universe this past week. Everything from Pacific Rim 2's new writer to Godzilla's sequel delay, to Godzilla vs. Kong's official release date and Kong: Skull Island's latest promotion which teased King Kong's reveal. This weekly re-cap will get you up to speed on all of it!
Godzilla 2014's sequel loses Gareth Edwards, gets delayed almost a year.
Not earth-shattering, but still quite surprising and unfortunate was the announcement that 'Godzilla' director Gareth Edwards would not be returning to direct it's sequel, 'Godzilla 2' for its originally scheduled summer, 2018 release date. The announcement came quickly following the release date shift for 'Godzilla 2', being pushed back nearly a year, to March 22nd, 2019.
However unfortunate the news may be, this did move 'Godzilla 2' much closer to its own sequel, 'Godzilla vs. Kong' which will release the following year on May 29th, 2020.
'Pacific Rim 2' gains 'Jurassic World' sequel scribe Derek Connolly!
Hot off the success of last summer's release of 'Jurassic World', co-writer Derek Connolly has officially been tapped to treat the current draft of 'Pacific Rim 2', the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 Mecha vs. Kaiju blockbuster. Having found its director in Steven DeKnight, the release date for Legendary's 'Pacific Rim' sequel has yet to be determined, but news of its existence and continued development brings a sigh of relief to the many fans out there who were worried Universal were planning to shelf the film indefinitely.
Connolly has also been busy crafting the storyline for the fifth Jurassic Park installment, 'Jurassic World 2' which currently eyes a June 22nd, 2018 release date with Juan Antonio Bayona attached to direct. Plot details remain unclear but given a number of recent interviews with Colin Trevorrow and Bayona himself, one can assume the franchise will be moving off the Islands, finding new territory on the mainland.
Both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be returning as Owen and Claire as filming for 'Jurassic World 2' begins early next year in the UK.
First glimpse at King Kong from Kong: Skull Island teased at cinema expo!
The Titanic Ape and star of Legendary and Universal's 'Kong: Skull Island', King Kong himself has remained a mystery. At least in terms of what he will look like and just how large he will be. However, during a recent cinema expo, a promotional display teased the hand of Kong! No, it's not major, but acts as the first official look at any part of the monster.
Acting as a blood relative and sequel to 2014's 'Godzilla', Skull Island will introduce King Kong in a brand new storyline, separate of all previous incarnations. Lead by Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson, 'Kong: Skull Island' will release in theaters on March 10th, 2017.
