Catching up on some Robocop movie news, it appears District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp has stepped away from directing the next Robocop movie titled Robocop Returns. The departure is a result of Blomkamp signing on to direct an original thriller for MGM. Unfortunately this is the second cult classic property Blomkamp was potentially involved with, the first of which was an Alien sequel (Alien 5 / Alien: Awakening) which would have been set after the events of Aliens and would have essentially retconned Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. First Alien, now Robocop - we must admit we're a bit disappointed to see him abandon this project as well.
Blomkamp took to Twitter himself to announce the news:
As it stands, Robocop Returns is without a director. The script however has been written by Terminator: Dark Fate scribe Justin Rhodes. As we learn more about Robocop Returns, we'll be sure to keep you posted!
