Japanese-American actor Mackenyu has joined the ever growing cast of Pacific Rim 2! Mackenyu is the latest in a long run of recent cast announcements for the highly anticipated Pacific Rim sequel. His inclusion ties the Pacific Rim franchise to its primary inspiration: Japanese special effects cinema.
He played, Eiji Tomari, the future son of the title character from the film Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future and was able to transform into a Rider himself. (Pictured below.)
In addition to Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future, Mackenyu has stared in other Japanese dramas adapted from manga, such as Chihayafuru and Peach Girl.
He will be joining John Boyega, Karan Brar, Ivanna Sakhno, Adria Arjona, Levi Meaden, Jing Tian and Cailee Spaeny in the battle against more Kaiju on February 23rd, 2018, when Pacific Rim 2 arrives in theaters!
UPDATE (10/27/16): Mackenyu shared through his official Twitter feed recently that his character name in Pacific Rim 2 will be Ryoichi. As we learn more about what role his character will play, we will be sure to update this post!
Currently, Pacific Rim 2 is undergoing preparations in Sydney, Australia before filming begins next month. John Boyega recently shared a behind-the-scenes video from Legacy Effects, where props for the film are being crafted.
