Today, at their annual shareholders meeting, Disney and Lucasfilm announced details surrounding the upcoming Star Wars films.
In addition, Gareth Edwards’ upcoming standalone film, starring Felicity Jones, will be called Rogue One. The movie starts filming in London this summer and opens on December 16, 2016. It is based off an idea from Oscar-winning VFX supervisor John Knoll and a script penned by Chris Weitz.
Kathleen Kennedy will produce the standalone film alongside Knoll, Tony To and John Schwartz.
Plot details are currently unknown.
While this is the case, early speculation believes Edwards', and Josh Trank's, Star Wars spin-offs may focus on the early days of popular characters Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa respectively.
Disney is banking heavily on the Star Wars franchise after acquiring Lucasfilm in October 2012 for $4 billion. The studio is also planning Star Wars-themed attractions at Disney parks across the globe.
The next entry in the popular franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set for release on December 18th, 2016 and stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega and Adam Driver.
