Admittedly when I first heard of Krampus I thought it was one of them shaky camera gorefest horror movies were a bunch of sexually overcharged teenage potheads are slaughtered one by one by some kind of anti-claus.
Turns out that Krampus is actually a throwback to the dark comedy horror movies that have since amassed a cult following; films like Gremlins, Critters and Ghostbusters. Directed by Michael Dougherty and starring an ensemble of recognisable B-list actors the movie tells of Christmas dinner for an atypical dysfunctional family who are visited by Krampus, an alpine folklore creature said to be the anti-claus, punishing children whom have misbehaved during the festive period.
The movie opened December 4th, and despite its low key marketing campaign and the overwhelming media favoritism towards this weeks mega-release Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Krampus has managed to amass $37 million against its $15 million budget, and has garnered positive reviews from critics.
