Director of the original Independence Day as well as the upcoming sequel, Independence Day 2, Roland Emmerich has taken to social media since the project's beginning to keep fans of the franchise up to date on all the latest details and cast announcements. Most recently, Emmerich shared a photo of returning star Jeff Goldblum, in-costume, on set! Following his post, co-writer Dean Devlin also shared a photo of Goldblum in-costume, however Roland's post seems to have gone relatively unnoticed with the larger media outlets, which is surprising, considering his reveals what Jeff's character will be in Independence Day 2!
Here's the photo Roland posted to his Instagram account recently:
As you can see, Goldblum is in what looks to be an Astronaut's outfit - which would suggest to us that he plays an Astronaut. The following is the photo Dean Devlin uploaded to his own Instagram, also featuring Goldblum, but without the bulky space-suit. What he is wearing however is very reminiscent of the jacket he wore in the original Independence Day movie.

So, given the two photos above, its clear that Jeff Goldblum's character, David Levinson, will be an Astronaut in Independence Day 2, likely a member of the force responsible for defending Earth against the returning Alien invaders.
