With Independence Day: Resurgence only a few short days away, Fox are sparing no expense with its marketing campaign.

One particularly odd piece of the promotional campaign comes from Japan, where the Unicorn Gundam mocha from the Gundam anime franchise replaces the Statue of Liberty in one of its posters, although it won't appear in the actual film.

So, why mix the two franchises in the poster, you ask? Well aside from the obvious monetary marketing reasons, Harutoshi Fukui, who wrote the original Gundam Unicorn novel, offered some further explanation:

"Our two works are connected like soul brothers by the theme of humanity's indomitable spirit pushing despair aside. The enemy this time may be reeeeally big, but humans won't lose! The Unicorn Gundam will help too! (In our hearts.)"

With Gundam being a gigantic franchise in Japan, using a character that Japanese audiences will be familiar with on the film’s poster seems like a wise decision to help sell the film in Japan. We’ll find out if it pays off when it lands there on 9 July 2016. It arrives in the US on June 24.
